Google already has an enemy at its peak, and it has attacked it from the least expected angle: Artificial Intelligence. ChatGPT has succeeded in disrupting a market that seemed very calm, both with its ‘chatbot’ and with the technology on which it is based, the GPT-4 language model which offers a human experience.
Although ChatGPT is primarily used to generate text from questions or prompts, its potential is far greater than its web application suggests. The fact that AI is able to understand the userand responding by speaking as if it were a real person, is something that even the best assistants like Alexa have failed to achieve.
So it makes sense that even car manufacturers are already experimenting with this technology. Mercedes-Benz will be the first to do so in commercial cars and available to buyers, with a test plan with which he intends to improve their experience.
ChatGPT in Mercedes cars
The plan, which will run for three months, will allow US drivers of select Mercedes-Benz vehicles to use a new ChatGPT-based personal assistant. In total, the company plans to reach more than 900,000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system available on various models, from June 16.
In reality, Mercedes-Benz already has a personal assistant, which is activated by the phrase “Hey Mercedes”; When it was released, it was one of the brand’s biggest car attractions, but it became obsolete along with ChatGPT and other generative AIs hitting the market. At its side, the Mercedes assistant is only able to recognize certain specific commands pre-programmed in the system memory, so it is not able to react to most user questions; It’s not that it’s a bad assistant, it’s that it was the general level of the industry until last year.
The reaction of the Stuttgart company was one of the fastest ever, being one of the first to recognize the threat, but above all the potential, of this new alternative. ChatGPT in Mercedes-Benz cars will be able to track conversations on anything that comes to mind, including consecutive questions on the same topic. Among other things, users will be able to find out about your destinationbased on GPS navigation, but the company has not anticipated all the possibilities it will have, so it is to be imagined that it will be able to do the same thing as in the web application.
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it is studying the possibility of creating “plugins”, additions to the assistant that allow access to new functions such as book a restaurant or buy movie tickets; and affirms that everything can only be done with voice, eliminating unnecessary distractions with the screen while we drive.
The arrival of ChatGPT on Mercedes-Benz cars was possible thanks to the alliance with Microsoft and the use of your Azure servers; It is also thanks to this that the manufacturer claims a high degree of confidentiality and security, promising that conversations will only be recorded on Mercedes-Benz servers, anonymously.
Although Mercedes-Benz will pioneer the actual use of ChatGPT in cars, it wasn’t the first to announce it; The Chinese manufacturer Jidu and the American General Motors have already planned that they will use ChatGPT, but for now the German company has made progress in the implementation.
