As can be seen from a private e-mail, Playstation boss Jim Ryan did not believe in a planned Xbox exclusivity from Call of Duty.
Microsoft is currently taking action against the FTC’s injunction regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard in the course of a multi-day hearing. Several senior Xbox executives will testify on the facts on the witness stand.
One of the points one would like to refute is Sony’s claim to regulators that as a result of the acquisition, Microsoft would release Call of Duty exclusively for Xbox, or even intentionally sabotage a possible PlayStation version.
In addition, Microsoft lawyers have now revealed an email exchange between PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan and a former Sony CEO, which suggests that Ryan privately believes that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is not about exclusivity at all from games:
“It’s not about exclusivity at all,” says Ryan. “They are thinking big and they have the money to take those steps. I have a lot of time with [Phil] Spencer and Bobby [Kotick] and I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing Call of Duty on PlayStation for years to come.”
“We have some good things in the works. I’m not complacent, I’d rather that didn’t happen, but we’ll be fine, more than fine.”
