According to executive producer Jared Neuss, who addressed the topic during a recent livestream, Overwatch 2 may not see the first three levels coming this August. Any new story content.
“Don’t expect next season or the next round of next season, or anything like that,” Noyce said during a live stream hosted by former pro and current anchor Emongg. There’s a balance between being in front of the player (because we like the story content) and giving ourselves enough time to make changes or add features or do whatever it takes to make it more engaging.”
Overwatch 2’s initial patch contains the first wave of story missions starting on August 10, and each season takes nine weeks to complete. This means that, if Neuss is correct, new story content in Overwatch 2 won’t be released until 2024.
Of course, Overwatch 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Blizzard’s killer new first-person shooter, Overwatch, and it’s being sold to the masses as a major PvE update. Fast-forward to 2023, and the originally planned single-player content has been scrapped and replaced with seasonal story missions designed to inject a bit of narrative luster into a game that otherwise lacked PvE content.
But as the months after August seemed to lack that story, controversy surrounding the shooter continued. Tensions rose less than a month ago after Activision Blizzard announced it would charge players for PvE content. All of this comes with the painful reality that the game that lacked these consumer-unfriendly practices, Overwatch 1, is gone forever.
