The year 2023 will not have been the kindest year with Asterix and his compatriots continuing to resist the invader but not having the expected success in cinemas. Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom ended its theatrical campaign with only 4.598 million admissions

or 13 weeks. For his part, director Guillaume Canet, who also plays Asterix, denies the 6 million that the producers were supposedly hoping for. It must be said that the fifth live-action adaptation of the Gallic Adventures has suffered greatly from the critical reception by the press (2.4/5 at AlloCiné) and even more so by the public (1.7/5 at AlloCiné).

Asterix seen by Alexandre Astier

Almost ten years ago, Alexandre Astier (writer, director and composer who became famous with the Kaamelott saga) took over one of the most iconic universes of Franco-Belgian comics and offered fans the adaptation of a particularly popular album. Asterix – The Empire of the Gods is an animated film co-directed by Louis Clichy and Simon Astier and written by the latter. The feature film was a real audience success with 2.996 million admissions in France and was received with open arms by the press (3.7/5 at AlloCiné) and the public (3.9/5 at AlloCiné), particularly the direction and the script praised.

Four years later, the duo Louis Clichy and Alexandre Astier are back again, offering viewers an original story… and not an adaptation of an existing album. Received with equal enthusiasm by both professionals in the field and fans of the Gauls (identical reviews on AlloCiné), “Asterix – The Secret of the Magic Potion” ends its cinema career with 3.923 million tickets sold.

Good news for everyone who missed these two animated films when they were released in 2014 and 2018, respectively: they will be back in theaters during the winter holidays.

The future of Asterix

Lovers of the universe conceived by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo will certainly be pleased to know that the latter will be reinvested by Alain Chabat (director of Asterix and Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre and its 14 million visitors in France). The animated series Le Combat des Chefs will be released on Netflix in the first half of 2025. Finally, a new animated film directed by Alexandre Heboyan and written by the duo Alexandre de La Patellière – Matthieu Delaporte is in development. With a budget of 30 million dollars, Alexandre Astier does not exist.
