Hollywood writer Drew McWeeny says Warner Bros.’ 2015 Mad Max game may indeed be a classic based on his interpretation of the script for upcoming blockbuster Furiosa. While it may seem like a small detail, this may add another battle scar to the most bizarre IP battle in the Mad Max series.
Drew McWeeney – Over the years he became known as a critic and writer – Posted on Twitter He spent Christmas reading the script for the upcoming Furiosa film. He said he was excited to see the movie, but notes on the script apparently “suggest that the Mad Max video game is a classic.”
That’s a cool detail in itself for Mad Max fans, especially those who played the 2015 cult classic. Developed by Avalanche Studios and Warner Bros., it’s a decent but inoffensive third-person action game that won over a lot of people (including myself) with its faithfulness to the world of Mad Max. . There’s a good reason for this – it was developed using a concept created by George Miller himself.
This is the source of a deep-rooted debate. George Miller has reportedly been trying to launch a Mad Max video game for years. According to an extremely in-depth video by Youtuber Mad Max Bible, it covers a 2008 game co-written with Corey Balrog that was unfortunately canceled by Warner Bros. Finally, Avalanche Studios has made its own Mad Max game that will draw on years of story, art, and characters.
The Mad Max Bible in the video linked above claims to have reached out to several people involved in Fury Road and says the people he spoke to told him the game is not, in fact, canon. That was six years ago, but what’s even more interesting is that a Mad Max game might even destroy Furiosa. We’ll keep things vague, but if you want to go in completely blind, spoiler warning ahead.
spoiler warning
In Mad Max 2015, you learn a lot about a character named Dr. Dementus. If this name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the name of Chris Hemsworth’s character in the upcoming Furiosa movie. The game’s description of what he does and what happens to him isn’t entirely vague – and since the game is based on Miller and his team’s 15 years of work on the Fury Road setting Concept – Those familiar with the game may feel that this information will be reflected in Furiosa when it releases later this year.
In terms of other things the game might spoil, its antagonist is another of Immortan Joe’s children, so maybe that will come up. But if you want to be safe, stay away from the game until the movie comes out! It all seems like a tragic problem, and the idea sounds really neat – making all Mad Max media interconnected. If the Fury Road game didn’t suffer from so many problems, perhaps there wouldn’t be such an embarrassing spoiler issue.
