Back in the day, before I started doing this weird job called video game journalism, I had been working in the hospitality industry longer than I thought I would. It always happens, my family comes from a background in that and my dad is a chef, so food is a big part of my life anyway. In turn, I’m lucky enough to know a little bit about cooking, and I’m pretty good at it! This is a skill that you have to put in the time because most people won’t teach you, which can sometimes make it difficult to learn. But, please bear with me, I sincerely think Delicious food in the dungeon, Netflix The latest anime about killing monsters and turning them into delicious meals has some surprisingly good lessons about cooking.

Let me introduce it first, because you may not have heard of this new animation. Adapted from the comic of the same name, “Dungeon Delicious” tells the story of a group of travelers trying to make their way through an underground dungeon filled with various creatures and monsters, and trying to rescue one of their members from the stomach of a dragon. . The only problem was, they were broke and couldn’t afford food. Enter Leos, the leader of the group and a lover of monsters, who suggests that they eat the monsters they kill.
The anime is adapted from the critically acclaimed Studio Trigger, known for titles like Kill la Kill, Promare, and most recently, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. It doesn’t have the weirdest animation in town, but it’s still well-rendered and a lot of fun, with a lot of it coming from completely opposing forces, namely Leos, the secret weirdo who wants to eat monsters, and Malsil, the elven mage of the bunch People are very disgusted with this idea.
What I love most about the way it presents cooking is the way it encourages experimentation. The first episode introduces a dwarf named Morihi, a strange guy who knows a lot more about cooking monsters than Leos does, thanks to years of researching how to do it. Leos is new to it all and just relies on guides to tell him what is and is not safe to eat, and while I love a good cookbook, it can only get you so far.
We can also learn some good lessons about foraging. At one point in the first episode, Marcil begins to prepare a spell that will kill a group of plant monsters they want to eat, but Sensi interrupts her, telling her that you should only eat the amount you need. This is also a true foraging rule because whenever you forage you should never take everything away and especially should leave anything out of your physical reach.
Through lessons like this, what we as viewers are left with is the idea that food is worthy of respect, especially its preparation, and the steps we take to even get to the preparation part. Cooking is definitely not for everyone, we all have our own skills, but I’m really glad I have it, and seeing the joy of cooking translate to the screen in such a wonderful way lights up my metaphorical kitchen stove.
What do I hear you say? Do you feel sick after eating “Big Scorpion Walking Mushroom Hot Pot”? Okay, fair enough, but if you ask me, this show does make it look delicious, and what’s really important here is that it’s not what you make but it’s worth taking the time to learn how to make it. That’s okay, you can make a regular hot pot, but when you do, be sure to spend some time thinking about why you’re adding your own. It might just make the food taste better.
