There’s a new one Mean Girls Film out! Tina Fey, who wrote the screenplay for the original Mean Girls wrote the script for the new film back in 2004, based on her book for the Broadway musical version. But this time the main roles are played by Angourie Rice (Easttown mare), Renee Rapp (The sex lives of college girls) and Auliʻi Cravalho (Moana), The trailers make it look like a soft reboot of Mark Waters’ 2004 film, but set two decades later. But that’s not it quite the case. During the year 2024 Mean Girls contains many references to the 2004 film (and some (recurring cast members) it comes with a distinctly new twist.
Here’s everything you can expect from 2024 – or what you might be wondering about Mean Girls.
Is “Mean Girls 2024” a musical?
For people who have seen or heard of the Broadway musical, this seems like an obvious question. But the early trailers largely hid the musical status of the film
However, all three versions were written by Tina Fey, who was inspired by the parenting book Queen bees and wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. The 2024 film was directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., marking his feature film debut.
Mean Girls (2024) tells a similar story to the 2004 film, but is set in the 2020s and therefore updates the story to include certain cultural touchpoints: for example, high school students communicating gossip via social media and TikToks Conference calls.
What songs were deleted or added in the 2024 Mean Girls movie?
As with many theatrical adaptations of stage musicals, some original songs were added for this film, some were cut from the Broadway version, and some were switched to other characters. In Mean Girls (2024), Cady’s massive opening number “It Roars” was replaced by the more subdued “What If?”, likely suited to Angourie Rice’s vocal range. Many of the introductory songs, such as “Where Do You Belong?” and “Meet the Plastics” were also shortened or reduced.
Other songs are from the Broadway version of Mean Girls are “Stop,” in which Damian (Jaquel Spivey in the film version) criticizes Cady for turning into a mega-slut; “Whose House Is This?”, about the house party that gets out of control; “Fearless,” the Plastics’ big anthem after they ousted Regina as Queen Bee; “More Is Better,” the love duet between Cady and Aaron; and “Do This Thing,” which takes place during the Mathletes tournament.
Another big change is coming to “Apex Predator.” In the stage version it is a duet between Cady and Janis. In the film, Damian takes over Cady’s role – again, probably to accommodate Rice and allow Spivey to perform his impressive vocals.
Does Mean Girls have a post-credits scene?
It does! Mean GirlsThe post-credits scene isn’t much of a plot hook for Mean Girls 2, a surprise appearance by an old cast member or a repeat of one of the songs. It’s an extremely short, two-line shot in which Regina (without the neck brace she wears at the end of the film) looks into the camera with the Plastics behind her and says: “You’re next!” – invites you as a viewer Reasons to undergo a transformation and become so hot
Which members of the 2004 Mean Girls cast will appear in the 2024 film?
Cameo spoilers ahead!
To maintain surprise, Tina Fey remained tight-lipped about whether anyone from the original Broadway cast or the 2004 cast would appear in the 2024 film. It’s clear from the trailers that she herself is reprising the role of Ms. Norbury, Cady’s AP Calculus teacher, and Tim Meadows is returning as Principal Duvall. (Longtime fans may be pleased to learn that they are romantic partners in the new film, which only appears in a brief but sweet exchange in one scene.)
There is a small cameo from the Broadway play: Ashley Park, who originated the role of Gretchen in the musical, plays Madame Park, the school’s French teacher. However, for long-time fans of the 2004 film, the big reveal comes at the end of the film, when Lindsay Lohan – the original Cady – ends up making a cameo appearance as the announcer overseeing the math tournament that Cady and her team win with the iconic answer “The border doesn’t exist.” Lohan gets a few spoken lines and is able to bring some authority to overseeing the game in a small nod to her pivotal role in the original film.
Mean Girls hits theaters on January 12th.
