News culture Thanks to Netflix, I watched inflatable dinosaurs fighting with knives and I think you should too
Sometimes the best shows are the ones that fly completely under the radar. In January 2024, the Sun Brothers series was released in its entirety on Netflix. Despite its great qualities and its cast, which includes a recent Oscar-winning actress, the series has remained somewhat unnoticed. However, she could well be one of the best at the start of the year.

When his family is attacked, a member of a Taipei triad travels to Los Angeles to protect his strong-willed mother and his brother, who knows nothing of their activities. – Synopsis Allociné
Behind this uninformative summary is actually a series with juicy humor and very well-choreographed action scenes that I can warmly recommend to you. It must be said that it is carried by a remarkable cast, consisting of many names currently unknown to Western audiences, such as: Justin Dog, Sam Song Lee or Highdee Kuan. Those who are more cautious can be reassured that the series is obviously rooted in Asian culture (particularly Taiwanese culture), it is well produced in an American style, and you don’t run the risk of becoming so disorientating. Plus, one of the few actresses you might recognize is none other than Michelle Yeohwho recently won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Everything, everywhere, everything at once. But then why do I recommend watching The Sun Brothers?
Why you need to watch this Netflix series
Have you ever seen inflatable dinosaurs fighting with knives and machine guns in a completely serious environment? I do, and it’s thanks to the series “The Sun Brothers” on Netflix. Better yet, this example is just one of many absolutely fabulous moments this series has to offer, and it only appears in the second of eight episodes. As I told you above, This series tells the story of an unusual family in which one party is a member of a well-known criminal organization in Taipei, while the other party lives a normal life in Los Angeles. While these two worlds will intersect very quickly, “The Sun Brothers” offers a daring mix of action, drama and humor that succeeds throughout the season.
Where Marvel has long accustomed us to using humor as a tool to defuse the most serious situations, this series manages to mix genres much more deftly without ever coming to the detriment of another. So, The humor is omnipresent in the situations, the characters or the dialogues and manages to hit the mark every time, but it never takes precedence when the more serious moments come to the screen, a true masterpiece that is increasingly rarely seen on screen. The result is some absolutely unforgettable and completely crazy scenes like the one that I mention in the title of the article or that serves as an introduction to the series that I let you see.
Obviously humor isn’t the only quality of this series. One of its most notable qualities actually lies in the writing of its characters. In fact, each of them has its own qualities and its own flaws that we regularly see on screen, which very quickly gives us the impression that we are dealing with real people and not fictional characters. Even Charles Sun, a true killing machine throughout the series, shows humanity from the start, regularly showing us his passion for baking, which completely characterizes his life as a criminal but makes him a character we enjoy following and enjoying development we follow. The other brother, Bruce Sun, thanks to his unfailing compassion and his banal but essential intelligence, manages to refute the clichés of the victim who does not know how to defend himself. I won’t give you the full list to save you from some surprises, but It’s still quite rare to see such human characters in an action series and the whole thing is a breath of fresh air that makes you want to see it through to the end.
Finally, in addition to the humor and characters, It’s the action scenes that I particularly liked in “The Sun Brothers”.
Very successful humor, very well written characters and well choreographed action scenes, that’s a small part of the summary I could give you about “The Sun Brothers”. If you want to start, note that the series is available in its entirety on Netflix and consists of 8 episodes averaging 50 minutes. Also note that even if there is room for a second season, none has been announced yet and with Season 1 ending in such a way that it could all end there. There is therefore no risk in starting today, even if it doesn’t go any further.
