It has been 25 years since the premiere of The Phantom Menace, the beginning of the Star Wars prequel trilogy led by George Lucas. The 1999 production showed us the past of legendary characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi or Yodabut also presented a good handful.
Without a doubt, the one that caught the public’s attention the most was Jar Jar Binks and his presence did not lead to applause. The vast majority detested the Gungan’s comic appearances and the criticism was consolidated over the years. However, not everyone agreed to join the wave of rejection.
Liam Neeson has precisely spoken about the role played by Ahmed Best and has done so to defend him. During an interview with Empirehe has detailed his view on the matter, which is shared by Ewan McGregor.
“Ahmed was so fun and inventive. Ewan and I feel personally hurt and offended by the reaction criticism towards the character,” says Neeson, who had several scenes with Jar Jar Binks. From his own words it is clear that his relationship with Best was really good.
On the other hand, McGregor also expresses words of affection towards the Qui-Gon Jinn actor, since Working alongside him took the pressure off when characterizing Kenobi. What’s more, he remembers with emotion the moment in which the Jedi master died in his arms.
“There are moments in any script that become little pinnacles, that there’s an expectation for you to reach emotionally. And that was one of them. I was very fond of Liam [Neeson]. He is such a generous and wonderful man. Playing him was super easy, because he was right in the moment with me, and I was there with him.”
