In a devastating turn of events for those who have been hoping to play Pentiment at the absolute highest performance settings, the game currently runs at 120 FPS on PlayStation but only 60 FPS on Xbox thanks to a Bug that should be resolved soon.
Yes, Obsidian, the excellent game about an artist and detective in 16th-century Bavaria, is now tentatively better on PS5 after being deployed to non-Xbox platforms as part of Microsoft’s plan to suddenly be good at cross-platform things. For the nature of the game, this area is not important. I’m sure this will mark another very calm and reasonable chapter in all the discussion surrounding Xbox that has dominated social media over the past month or so.

As of this writing, you can run Pentiment at 120 frames per second on the PS5 – a game I once played flawlessly on an older laptop that had pretty low specs from a gaming perspective. On Xbox Series X/S, your frame rate is locked at around 60 FPS, and there’s no doubt you’re missing out on a ton of immersion as a result.
why is that? Well, as game director Josh Sawyer confirmed via tweet, it’s due to a minor issue that hopefully is just a temporary hindrance and allows you to enjoy playing at the same speed as Call of Duty or Fortnite 2D Monk. “Xbox will enable 120FPS in the next patch. It’s just a bug that it’s disabled,” Sawyer posted in response to a post about the situation.

So, that’s it, it’s not a big deal, even if you’re desperate to travel at sonic speed through the mystery surrounding Tassing, or have somehow misunderstood that this game was (as far as I know) the world’s first. Renaissance themed shooting game.
To be fair, if Obsidian is looking for ideas, In Another Life I did point out that Pentiment has a lot of interesting little things thematically with the original Die Hard, so add a few more to Maler’s arsenal An SMG or Barrett 50 cal sniper rifle can be a fun idea for a new mini-game.
Hey, at least you should have a chance to get a physical copy of the game soon, thanks to the folks at Limited Run Games.
