You know that guy with the fire and snake in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC trailer for Elden Ring? Yes, Mesmer. Someone just created a mod that helps your Tarnished imitate him, and in a way that’s especially fun for the loremasters at FromSoft.
Yeah, stop thinking about what life would be like if you started playing the base game by relaxing on the beach, there’s a new thing you have to figure out how to mess up your game in a way that doesn’t install it somehow – But don’t worry, walkthroughs exist for a reason. Seriously though, if you like looking cool while banging your boss’s brains out, there’s something here for you.

This question was produced by Rayan, also known as Da7mX. It’s called “Recovery 1.0 and Closed Network Test VFX,” and it functions exactly like the real thing. As the modders revealed in a tweet and in the description of their creation, they have completed and restored all attack particle effects from the Elden Ring network test and 1.0 disc versions, adding in the gorgeous elements that were removed or changed to the current version of Elden Ring. game.
If you’re curious about what’s changed, Rayan even put together a cool Twitter thread filled with screenshots showing off the vast array of effects the mod affects and explaining how they differ from the base version. For many of them, it’s as simple as a color adjustment, but there’s some other cool stuff making a comeback, like Godfrey’s Tomahawk Ember flick “Spikes on Every Stomp.”
Another interesting change is that it seems like the Elden Beast’s special attacks will create a bunch of golden ring effects, which sometimes seem to have extra effects on top of the usual total.

The reason you’re probably here, though, is that some of the mod’s fire-based effects look a bit like what we saw from Messmer in the DLC trailer. Sure, you’ll probably end up looking more like a kid playing impaler, but hey, maybe you can find a way to stand on the intruder’s shoulders and make yourself look more impressive.
While you’re thinking about this, if you’re interested, you can check out the spreadsheet the modder put together detailing “Network Testing and Every Unique File in 1.0″ [versions] no longer exists in [the] [retail version of the game]”. Also, it looks like they might make another similar mod, but with the intention of reviving early game material at some point in the future, so keep an eye out for that.
