A volcano has erupted again in Iceland. The last outbreak on the northern European island was just five weeks ago. This time it hit a volcano near the coastal town of Grindavik.
The Tagesschau reports that around 700 tourists from nearby Thermal bath had to be evacuated in Sylingarfell. Some residents who returned to Grindavik after the last eruption are also said to have been taken out of the city again. There are currently no people in danger.

A fissure in the earth about 3.5 kilometers long has opened up. The volcanic eruption was announced by strong seismic activity; according to experts, there were around 80 earthquakes.
Iceland has more than 30 active volcanic systems and is therefore the largest and most active volcanic region in Europe. Grindavik is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, approximately 55 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik. There have been a total of four volcanic eruptions on the peninsula since mid-December 2023.
