Sky announces Sky Stream, a new streaming box. It is scheduled to launch in this country in late summer 2024 and offer a better user experience than Amazon’s Fire TV Stick.
- With Sky Stream, the pay-TV broadcaster is launching a new streaming box on the market this summer.
- According to Sky, it should offer a completely new TV experience.
- The box is already available in Great Britain.
The pay TV broadcaster Sky wants to win new subscribers for itself and its offers with a new streaming box called “Sky Stream”. The box is scheduled to appear in Germany from late summer 2024, with a market launch in Austria planned for 2025. Sky Stream is intended to bundle content from free TV, Sky channels and various streaming services and make it easily and quickly accessible under one interface.
Barny Mills, CEO of Sky Deutschland, promises a completely “new TV experience” in a press release. A look at Great Britain reveals what the whole thing will look like. Sky Stream has been available there for a few weeks. Sky presents the new platform in detail in a YouTube video that is almost 4 minutes long.
Recommendations across all services
A key difference to other platforms such as Amazon’s Fire TV is the recommendations that you receive collected in one place – regardless of which channel or streaming service the respective content is on. You can also create a playlist with your favorites across all services with Sky Stream.
In the interface you will also find “films”, “series” and other content sorted by genre, and content from live TV and apps is also summarized here. A voice search, which you can activate via the remote control, as well as the option to restart TV shows that have already started, round off the Sky Stream TV experience.
Initial reactions are quite positive
The feedback from the first testers in Great Britain is quite positive. The online magazine praises both T3 as well as the online magazine TechRadar the image quality is very good. No wonder! The box supports both Dolby Vision and 4K. The Sky Q IPTV box, which is already available in this country, only supports 4K to a limited extent.
However, the testers criticize the fact that with Sky Stream you also receive recommendations for films and series from providers that you have not subscribed to. There is no way to stop this. Furthermore, Sky Stream in Great Britain currently only supports the most popular streaming services. Smaller offerings such as Shudder are not yet available as an app. In comparison to Sky Q, the option to record films and series is also missing.
The box also does not support HDMI-CEC and is therefore unable to control connected devices such as soundbars and the like. Sky may still make improvements here before the market launch in Germany.
It will also be exciting to see what the pricing is like in this country. In the UK you can try the box for free for a month. Sky Stream then costs 31 pounds (around 36 dollars) per month. The price includes the box, Netflix access and the Sky entertainment package.
