News culture “I think we made Fallout 6”: The screenwriter of the Prime Video series explains the underside of the series adaptation
The Fallout series will soon be available on Prime Video, marking the end of a large community’s several-year wait: Apparently those responsible for the series are on a promotional tour… and allow themselves some juicy explanations.
War never dies
The Fallout saga has been a pillar of video gaming since the first episode came out in the late ’90s, and while the formula has changed since Bethesda acquired the license, the series remains hugely popular. So yes, there were small problems – a certain Fallout 76, but they made up for it over the years – But fans are already excited about the future arrival of Fallout 5, which has officially been in pre-production for some time now.
Well, don’t rush too much either, because the project is still at an early stage: first, the American studio has to produce The Elder Scrolls 6, a huge project that will only be completed in a few years. In any case, you should know that a pitch for Fallout 5 has been ready internally for a long time, according to Todd Howard… And now Amazon’s series adaptation would even look like a sixth episode.
Exit to the shelter
You probably know that a Fallout series is coming to Prime Video soon: It will tell the untold story of Lucy, a young woman who decides to leave her fallout shelter on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Outside, she discovers a retrofuturistic world ravaged by nuclear bombs, with mutating creatures, destructive weapons and a philosophy of survival. All with a good dose of dark humor and blatant violence.
In an interview with Den of Geek, Todd Howard (from Bethesda), Jonathan Nolan (writer, director and producer of the series) and Graham Wagner (showrunner) reflected on this completely new story. So unprecedented that not so long ago Nolan explained this in another interview “It was almost like they were making Fallout 5”. Obviously, fans saw hints about the story of the future Fallout 5, which are still very discreet at the moment.
Nolan therefore corrected his comments: No, the Fallout series will not tell the story of Fallout 5. On the other hand, it fits well into the world of video games.
You get all the benefits of the great storytelling that Todd and Bethesda have contributed to, but we also get to tell an unprecedented story in this setting, this world. For me as a writer and filmmaker, it’s simply a dream come true.
“I think we made Fallout 6”Wagner even replied in a joking tone. “We know everything about Fallout 5, but we don’t tell anyone”, replied Nolan, also amused. A reference to a private conversation with Todd Howard beforehand, in which he had actually confided certain private details in order to avoid repetitions in the series: “There were certain moments where I told them, ‘Don’t do that because we’re going to do it in Fallout 5′”, Howard explained in the interview. In short, we’ll be eating Fallout for a few more years, that’s a certainty.
See you on April 11, 2024 on Prime Video!
