As popular as YouTuber ToastedShoes may be, it looks like Warner Bros. has threatened to “destroy” his channel over his Mortal Kombat 1 mod videos.

While they can obviously get you in some trouble, mods for fighting games are actually quite popular, mostly because it’s fun to watch the most random people or characters duke it out (take the Mortal Kombat 1 Kendrick vs Drake mod, for example). However, YouTuber ToastedShoes has found himself in said trouble, claiming that Warner Bros. “threatened to destroy” his YouTube channel, leaving him at a loss as to what to do. ToastedShoes is known for a ton of popular mod videos, the most popular of which is for Mortal Kombat 1.

“This morning I received an IP infringement notice directly from Warner Bros. stating that the Mortal Kombat mods in my content ‘infringed’ their intellectual property,” ToastedShoes wrote on Twitter earlier this week. “They demanded that I remove all Mortal Kombat 1 videos from my channel or they would issue a copyright strike and essentially delete my entire channel.

“For over 6 months, Warner Bros. has not had any issues with anyone modifying the game. [Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon] He himself has shared countless videos and clips of the mods praising them. My mod clips have over 1 billion views across all platforms, allowing me to draw attention to the game and continue to support the development teams I work with. The revenue from these videos pays the salaries of my modding team who work with me both part-time and full-time.”

ToastedShoes went on to explain that the emails he received were not even replyable, so he was unable to contact Warner Bros. to determine what content infringed their copyright. In an email to Eurogamer, ToastedShoes stated that he has not “received a cease and desist notice from Warner Bros. or NetherRealm.”

This is obviously a bit odd considering that ToastedShoes has been doing this for a long time, but unfortunately, in situations like this, big corporations always have the power.
