He is as old as time itself, kind-hearted – and dispensable. Tom Bombadil from “The Lord of the Rings” has never made it into a Tolkien adaptation. That changes in “The Rings of Power” Season 2.
Whether “The Lord of the Rings” fans know Tom Bombadil depends on whether they have read JRR Tolkien’s books or simply seen Peter Jackson’s films. Because even in Jackson’s extended versions there was no room for the funny goblin who lives in the forest with his wife Goldberry and is one of the first points of contact for the hobbits from the Shire.
It is not difficult to explain Tom Bombadil’s absence from the film adaptations, because he is actually completely dispensable to the plot. He is a funny and kind-hearted character who has existed in Middle Earth since the beginning of time and who puzzles even Gandalf, but Tom Bombadil also stays out of all arguments and problems. He wants nothing to do with the War of the Ring.
After rumors had been circulating for some time, it has now been confirmed that Tom Bombadil will appear in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2. Tom Bombadil’s advanced age means nothing stands in the way of this appearance, but how does he fit into the plot of the Prime Video series?
The neutral Tom intervenes
In an interview with Vanity Fair The “Rings of Power” showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne talked about the challenge of incorporating a character without his own motivation into the plot in a meaningful way. But the fact that Tom Bombadil loves nature ultimately provided the decisive idea.
In our story, he has traveled to the land of Rhun, which we learn was once something like a Garden of Eden, green and beautiful, but now it is a kind of dead wasteland. Tom has gone there to see what has happened while he is on his various wanderings

There, Tom Bombadil will also meet Nori and the stranger, who is presumably Gandalf. JD Bayne admits that Tom Bombadil will influence the stranger in a certain way and will therefore intervene a little more in the events than in “The Lord of the Rings”.
According to Payne, Tom Bombadil, with his cheerful and sometimes almost silly manner, is a counterpoint to the predominantly dark moments in Season 2, which mainly focuses on the villains.
We have Sauron, no longer hiding behind the cloak of Halbrand. The audience knows he’s Sauron, and now we’re watching him manipulate Adar, who is another big villain of the season…. Tom is really kind of an oddity within this structure, because even though it’s darker, Tom Bombadil sings and says lines that could be nursery rhymes from children’s poems. So he bucks the shift in tone of the rest of the season and is a real point of light in the midst of a lot of darkness.

Rory Kinnear will take on the role of Tom Bombadil in “Rings of Power” season 2. Kinnear is known, among other things, as Ms. Chief of Staff Bill Tanner from the “James Bond” films with Daniel Craig. Whether Tom Bombadil’s appearance is a guest appearance or a larger role in the “Lord of the Rings” series has not yet been revealed.
