The PS4 is apparently not going to die so quickly and even in the fourth year of the PS5, not all users have made the jump. So it’s no wonder that some games are still being released for the old generation.
The complete change of guard at the Playstation consoles seems to take quite a while, if you believe the current figures that Sony has released as part of a presentation
In terms of the number of monthly active users, PS4 and PS5 are still on par. In the document, Sony reports 49 million active consoles per month.
“The PlayStation 5 user base has continued to grow significantly and now accounts for half of our monthly active consoles,” said Sony’s Hideaki Nishino. “While PlayStation 4 is still an important part of our business, our PlayStation 5 players are even more engaged than in the previous generation, and we expect this trend to continue.”
It’s hardly surprising that even in the fourth year of the Playstation 5, a whole series of games are still being released for consoles of both generations. The exclusive titles God of War: Ragnarök and Horizon: Forbidden West were released for both platforms. Sony only made the generational change with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game sold brilliantly, by the way. As you can see from the document, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold a whopping 11 million copies, meaning that almost one in five PS5 owners bought the title.
In the live service area, which is still a bit of a work in progress at Sony, Helldivers 2 was a real surprise hit. A total of 12 million copies of the alien hunt were sold on PC and PS5.
However, the trend is increasingly moving towards current-gen-only games, so the proportion of PS4 users will probably fall in the foreseeable future. It will also be interesting to see if and when a PS5 Pro will be in stores and thus give another boost to PS5 buyers.
