Ubisoft announces its intention to revive a license that has been dead and buried for almost 10 years. A return that fans of the franchise have waited far too long for. But this time, it’s good that something is brewing.
Saving and recovering missing and forgotten licenses has become a fashion. As large publishers fail to create new franchises, they prefer to dip into their portfolio and dust off old, safe assets. Ubisoft is about to get started and pull out a license that was popular with PS1 gamers at the time and unfortunately has not stood the test of time as it should have.
Ubisoft wants to revive a cult and forgotten license
While GTA seems to be at the top of the world, there have been attempts from all sides to break into the genre. Even older than The escape or Saints Rowthere were driver. An open world game (relatively speaking for the time) that puts us in the shoes of a police officer, John Tanner, who is good at driving but whose methods are a bit hasty.
Driver tried to make a name for himself from 1999 to 2011 and almost succeeded before being completely phased out. From then on, the franchise lay dormant in the Ubisoft catalog… well, until now.
This is good and bad news from Ubisoft. The publisher planned to revive the license in the form of a live-action series thanks to one of its subsidiaries, Hotrod Tanner LLC, which was designed specifically for the occasion. But that was before, as the company stated that everything was completed as announced Game file
“We are not making any progress with our partner for the Bingo for a Driver series” says Ubisoft. It’s clear and obvious. No live-action series, then, but not everything is dead yet. Ubisoft is already not stopping all adaptation projects since the film Watchdog
As far as an adaptation is ruled out, the only thing left is the trace of the new game or something else entirely. Anyway, Driver will soon rise from the dead, Ubisoft is on the case. I hope he doesn’t make us a new Beyond Good & Evil 2… the Arlesian’s place is already taken.
