A new rumor claims to reveal details about the RDNA4 chip that will likely be in the Playstation 5 Pro. It primarily concerns features that are useful for calculating ray tracing and promise a more efficient way of working.
Im Detail: Renowned leaker Kepler_L2 published a new table over the weekend that supposedly shows the ray tracing features of AMD’s upcoming RDNA4 generation.
“Most, if not all” of them will also be used in the Playstation 5 Pro, which has not yet been announced.

These seven ray tracing features are coming and the following improvements (via Videocardz) of the corresponding performance on RDNA 4 and PS5 Pro:
- »Double Ray Tracing Intersect Engine«: Saved computing time by calculating two light rays.
- »RT instance node transform«: More efficient handling of geometric structures by grouping similar objects.
- »64B RT node«: Faster calculation through larger packets.
- »Ray Tracing Tri Pair optimization«: Optimization of the calculation of triangles when they are close to each other.
- »Change flags encoded in barycentrics«: Faster updating of objects when they change their position.
- »BVH Footprint Improvement«: Faster grouping of scene geometry.
- »RT support for OBB and Instance Node Intersection«: Greater precision of Oriented Bounding Box.

Nvidia RTX 5000 and the future: Does AMD still have a chance?
It should not stay that way: In the leaker’s image above, the blacked-out bars are hard to miss – but what do these lines stand for?
As Kepler_L2 explains in a comment, this refers to a total of nine features that are also supposed to come as part of RDNA 4, but have no connection to ray tracing.
However, it is not clear from the commentary whether the unknown innovations are also planned for the PS5 Pro.
When will we find out more? According to current information, several months will probably pass between the release of the new RDNA4 generation (Radeon RX 8000) and the Playstation 5 Pro:
While it is currently assumed that AMD will not introduce any new graphics cards this year, the new Sony console is expected to be released in 2024.
The likely time frame for the launch of the PS5 Pro is currently November 2024, while the GPU manufacturer is likely to show the first RX 8000 models at CES 2025 in January.
