Technology is evolving more and more and it is normal to see how many countries choose to include some of the new creations developed to support certain assets such as police forces. This, as we can imagine, is something that happens very frequently in the United States, and this time, the Department of Homeland Security of that country has issued a statement stating that they have developed a “dog» robot to interfere with signals from Wi-Fi devices.
One of the great advances we have made in recent years has been the creation of the first fully functional robots capable of simulating the actions of some species of animals such as dogs. These types of robots, which only a few years ago seemed possible to create in science fiction stories, are increasingly becoming commonplace, although it is clear that for many years they will only be used for defense and security purposes, given the main reason for which they were developed.
A dog-shaped robot that inhibits signals, the new American creation
It sounds like something out of a video game, but it is already a reality, and the United States has managed to develop a robot dog named as NEO which integrates a series of antennas that allow to completely inhibit the signals of a home network. The objective for which this robot was created is to prevent an armed suspect from obtaining information about the police officers who go to a house through certain smart devices such as security cameras or doorbells that also include this type of information cameras.
This would allow police officers to completely eliminate, according to Benjamine Huffman, director of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) of the DHS, all the capabilities that a suspect has to respond to a police raid. The operation of this robot is quite simple, and we are actually talking about an extremely powerful signal inhibitor with legs, since it allows to overload home networks, thus interrupting the devices
Although this robot was announced in 2020, the final development was presented at this year’s Border Security Expo, showing all the capabilities it has for use in defense and security.
How necessary is this?
As the Department of Homeland Security indicates, this development is absolutely necessary to protect the physical integrity of police officers who find themselves in situations where they have to search the home of a suspect, since we know perfectly well what the United States is. For example, anyone can own a firearm and use it as they please. In this case, it is obviously necessary to take this into account, since the suspect can identify the number of officers present through a surveillance camera and start shooting as soon as he opens the door.
It is a fact that has happened on several occasions as one can imagine, one of the main reasons that motivated the creation of this “Dog” was an event that occurred during a search of the home of a suspect in child sexual abuse, the shooter opened fire on several FBI agents behind the closed door with an assault rifle, killing two veteran agents and injuring three others after identifying them through his doorbell camera.
Although in the end we are talking about a mechanism that offers the possibility of carrying out DoS attacks without any complications, which can obviously represent a big problem if carried out carelessly.
