When it comes to the strategy of some live service game providers, Steve Sinclair of Warframe home Digital Extremes has a clear opinion.
There are many opinions on live service games from both the business and the player side. Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair has his own opinion and it says that many providers give up too early.
In an interview with VGC, he explained that many launch a game expecting it to either fail or be a big hit, but then they release it, it doesn’t work, and they abandon it.
He asks whether it wouldn’t be a shame to invest so many years of one’s life in these systems, in building the technology and the community, and then to bury one’s head in the sand because the operating costs are high and one is afraid that the number of users will drop.
Far too many great games have already fallen victim to this approach, explains Sinclair. Since he has had extensive experience with Warframe, he should know what he is talking about. In 2013, Warframe was one of the first games to see itself as a live service game. A decade later, it is a fixture on the market, receives regular content updates and is celebrated with an annual convention.
