Although it’s been a while since a new mainline Borderlands game was released, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford believes that fans will be “very, very happy” with the next one.
It wasn’t until 2022 that we got to enter the world of Borderlands with Borderlands New Tales, and of course the spinoff Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, which put a more fantastical spin on the series’ classic shoot-’em-up and loot-heist gameplay. But as far as the main series is concerned, there haven’t been any new games in five full years since 2019’s Borderlands 3. So this raises the question: where might a hypothetical Borderlands 4 be? It was mentioned by a developer on LinkedIn last year, but there hasn’t been any official announcement.

Now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford says fans won’t have to wait too long for an announcement of what’s next in the Borderlands universe. “I can’t perfectly hide the fact that we’re doing a lot of things, and we’re doing big things,” Pitchford said. “I’m confident that our fans will be very, very satisfied when we’re ready to announce the next video game project. And I’ll tell you, we’re not going to make people wait very long to announce it.”
Pitchford also revealed that a sequel to the upcoming Borderlands movie could be announced “before the end of the year. We’ll see. Maybe sooner.” He continued, “I have the biggest, best team ever, and we know that’s what the fans want – so I’m very, very excited. I can’t wait to talk about it! I wish I could talk about it right now because we have so much to say!”
Those who enjoyed Tiny Tina’s Wonderland might also be looking forward to this game, with Pitchford explaining that Gearbox “achieved a much bigger feat with the first Wonderland game than the first Borderlands game did, so we can build on that. I love fantasy. That’s why we did the original Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2, because I love fantasy so much. A lot of people at Gearbox love fantasy, and it gives us this space to play with fantasy within the context of the Borderlands themes and universe. I think our fans have reason to expect more.”
The next installment in the Borderlands franchise is obviously the film, which is due to be released in a few weeks, on August 8 in the UK and August 9 in the US.
