Famous director David Lynch explained in a recent interview that he suffers from emphysema, a lung disease that causes shortness of breath. He attributes this to his love of smoking and tobacco. However, despite rumors that he would retire, Lynch says he has no plans to do so.
Lynch released Eraser headhis first feature film, in 1977 and has since made a name for himself as the director behind many surrealist, quirky and strange films and television shows that often contain a lot of heart and passion. He famously helped create the bizarre and popular mystery show Twin Peaks in the 90s and returned to the series in 2017 for a critically acclaimed third season. Lynch’s last feature film, however, hit theaters in 2006, and it seems it might be a while before we see anot her film from the famous director.
In a recent interview with Picture and sound magazineThe 78-year-old director said he has been diagnosed with emphysema and the disease affects his ability to move, meaning he may only be able to shoot future films and television shows remotely.
When this became known online, people began to speculate that he was retiring altogether, but the creator denied this in a post on Twitter after the interview, saying, “I will never retire” and reassuring his fans that he was fine. He also explained that his lung disease was directly caused by his “long-term” cigarette smoking.
“Yes, I have pulmonary emphysema from years of smoking,” Lynch said on Twitter on August 5“I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I love tobacco – the smell, lighting cigarettes, smoking – but that pleasure comes at a price, and for me that price is emphysema.”
In the message posted on social media, Lynch said he quit smoking over two years ago and that recent tests had given him “good news”: he was “in excellent shape, except for emphysema.”
“I am overjoyed and will never retire,” Lynch concluded. “I want you all to know that I truly appreciate your condolences. Love, David”
