Unlike other years, the launch of the new generation of Pixel phones has not been accompanied by a new version of Android; the new Pixel 9 comes with Android 14, just like the Pixel 8. The good news is that we won’t have to wait long to install the new version of the system on our mobile.
And Google confirmed the Android 15 source code released on AOSP (Android Open Source Project), a critical step for the launch of the operating system for all mobile phones, tablets and other systems. Android is an open source system and as such, once published on AOSP, any developer can use it in their project.
This means that from now on, we will start seeing the release of Android 15 versions; it all depends on the changes and features (such as apps or interface changes) that each manufacturer wants to bring. For example, the Pixels are not expected to receive Android 15 at least until mid-October
Similarly, Samsung could also launch One UI 7 from now on, but it will probably still be a few weeks away; the same can be said for the rest of the brands, each with a different plan to support Android 15. Finally, this launch is important for creators of “custom” ROMs; the first ones based on Android 15 should be released in just a few days.
Due to the separation between Google and Android, most of the new features in Android 15 focus on system stability and performance; although that doesn’t mean there aren’t some interesting news.
For example, Android 15 promises a Better camera performance in low light conditions
One feature that will likely be very well received is “Private Space.” This is a section that will remain hidden and will only be accessible if we identify ourselves (for example, with a fingerprint); It will be possible to keep applications stored in this section, so that they are not accessible to people who take our mobile phone. Android applications can now be “archived”, a process that reduces their size and allows you to recover storage space. Enhanced security measures will also be applied to prevent the launch of unauthorized applications.
Tablet and foldable phone users have something to rejoice about, as Android 15 will finally allow us to save our favorite app combinations in split-screen mode, allowing us to always open the same apps in the same position. Another much-appreciated new feature is the ability to keep taskbar always fixed down.
One of the oldest traditions of Android is to name each new version after a dessert; like Android 8 Oreo or Android 9 Pie. Since Android 10, this name is no longer public, but the tradition has not been forgotten; it’s just that the name is now only used internally.
Android 15 has been named “Vanilla Ice Cream” Internally, and with the launch of this version, Google headquarters has acquired a new statue of The Bot, the Android mascot, sitting on a bench. This statue, as well as the inscription on the bench, are only visible to Google employees, unlike other statues installed in the public part of the campus.
