It turns out that a Watch Dogs movie is in the works and has actually wrapped filming.
Like the Minecraft and Borderlands movies, the Watch Dogs movie has been in the works for about a decade, but unlike the Minecraft movie, which finally got a trailer last week, and the Borderlands movie that was released last week (too bad it was released digitally three weeks after being in theaters), we haven’t seen much of Ubisoft’s adaptation yet. In fact, we haven’t really seen anything, despite a few casting news earlier this year and another this week. Along with it came a tweet from Ubisoft confirming that filming on the Watch Dogs movie adaptation has completely wrapped, though I don’t seem to have noticed that production had even begun.

I guess that’s what happens when Ubisoft takes 10 years to make a movie – people can only pay attention for so long when it comes to production timelines. Apparently, Ubisoft did announce over the summer that production was underway, but again, there hasn’t been a game out in four years (the AAA gaming industry is fine, thanks for asking), so general awareness of the series isn’t at an all-time high.

Ubisoft’s recent share price crash has dealt the company a heavy blow, and one investor has written a letter to the company expressing the desire to take the developer private so that it can “revitalize Ubisoft’s games” – apparently, this will include layoffs, which is definitely the way to make great games (via Rock Paper Shotgun). The letter specifically mentions that despite being “loved by millions of players around the world,” Watch Dogs has “lain dormant for several years.” As far as anyone knows, a new Watch Dogs game is not in development, which is an odd choice considering a movie is about to be released.
The movie has yet to have a release date, so like the games, the plot of Watch Dogs is still up in the air. In the meantime, you’ll just have to replay the games.
