The Game Awards will reveal all the nominees for a number of awards next week, and want you to know that these may include DLC, expansion packs, and remasters.
Last year, The Game Awards generated minimal controversy in one specific category, “Best Ongoing Game.” The usual suspects are Apex Legends and Final Fantasy XIV, but oddly enough, there’s also Cyberpunk 2077. This is weird because it’s a single-player game, and it did release Phantom Free in 2023, but it ended years of work to make the game actually playable. Cyberpunk ended up winning the award, and whether it deserved it is up for debate, but it was clearly an odd choice – and now, ahead of announcing its nominees next week, The Game Awards has released an FAQ clarifying what Actually qualified.

The FAQ asks if DLC, expansion packs and remasters/remasters are eligible for the awards, and the answer explains as follows: “The Game Awards celebrate the best creative and technical work each year, regardless of the form in which the content is released. If the jury deems New creative and technical works are worthy of nomination, and factors such as the novelty of the content, new game seasons, DLC, and remasters should be taken into consideration.”

What exactly does this mean? Well, this definitely suggests that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree could be nominated for the coveted Game of the Year, and considering how big the game is, it’s probably worthy of the award. But it’s an interesting clarification, as big releases have been pretty quiet this year compared to 2023, when indie games received more attention. There are only a few days left until the nominees are revealed, so we won’t have to wait too long, but maybe be prepared for some controversial choices.
