In our modern digital world, the need to scan mobile documents on a PC is very small. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.
If you need to sign a contract by hand but email it, or make a copy of important text that you can’t afford to lose, scanning your computer is a very effective method. It would also be great if you have photos that you would like to use for a digital photo album or that you can share with friends and family.
Most modern scanners come with their own software, but there are two easy ways to use Windows 10. All the instructions below apply to scanning text and images.
How to scan documents with Windows Scan program
The Windows Scan app may be the easiest way to scan documents on your Windows 10 device:
- Download the Windows Scan from the Microsoft store. You will be redirected to the desktop application to install it on your device
- Open the app once downloaded. You will be asked to connect a scanner, which can be physically via USB or wireless
- On the next screen, make sure you select the appropriate scanner and select the type of file you want to upload as (JPEG, PNG, and PDF are the most common)
- Before proceeding, click on ‘Show more’ to choose whether you want it in color or black and white, as well as the resolution and location of the file.
- Click on ‘Preview‘ to make sure you are happy with your choice, using pins to cut if necessary.
- When you’re ready, click ‘Scan‘. After a few seconds, a message will appear that you have saved it, and it will ask you to view that file
How to Scan Documents Using Windows Fax and Scanner
Unless it is software Old Windows Fax and Scan still work with Windows 10 and work the same way. Here’s how to use it:
- Open Windows Fax and Scan by searching next to the start menu
- On the main screen, click the ‘Scan’ option in the lower right corner and then ‘New Scan’ in the top menu.
- Customize the remaining settings according to preferences. ‘Root’ should be set to ‘Flatbed’ unless you have a scanner to feed it
- Click on ‘Preview‘ to make sure scanning is what you want and then ‘Scan’ to finish
- After a few seconds, you should see a file appear on the Home screen. The left panel will show you where to find it within File Explorer.
