The electric cup is here! As with the recent Weather Cup, this Pokemon Go The Go Battle League Special Cup has heavy restrictions. So if you’re ready to find out if you have the power, now’s the time to channel your inner Stan Bush and turn three Pokémon into Electric Cup best team in Pokemon Go.
As usual with these cups, the rules of the Great League in Pokémon Go apply here – but with the usual twist hinted at in the name. Not only do you need to find the most efficient team possible at 1500 CP and below, but: only Electric-type Pokémon are allowed and you can’t use a Pokémon from the forbidden list.
Things to know about building an Electric Cup team in Pokémon Go
The best thing about the 1500 CP cap is that, like the Great League, building a squad is relatively cheap and easy on Stardust.
The obvious downside to this specific cup is that the pool of eligible choices is only 49 Pokemon deep – and that includes the utterly useless ones like Elekid and Oricorio. That should come as no surprise, considering Electric is actually one of the shallowest pools, if not the shallowest in typing.
So how do you choose Pokemon for an element-based cup? It starts and ends with what this guy is weak and resistant to. Electric-types are resistant to Flying, Steel, and Electric-type attacksso don’t bring those, and therefore why Oricorio is worse than useless here – shocking, we know.
Next, we need to consider what weaknesses we can exploit. Unsurprisingly to anyone who appreciates electronics, the obvious safety net is to ground yourself – just as water puts out fire, Electric-types are weak to Earth-type attacks.
However, there are no Ground-type Pokemon in this meta, which means you can’t just rely on Mud Shotting for victory. Instead, you need to build around resistances and plan out what other types you think your opponent will add to the mix – remember, as long as one of the Pokemon types is Electric (and it’s not on the forbidden list), it is a safe inclusion in the Electric Cup.
Speaking of which, the complete list of prohibitions is inferior to:
- Stunfish
- Charjabug
- Heliolisk
- He was quarrelsome
Given the low CP cap of 1500, there are no mythical Pokemon to worry about here, so don’t worry if you’re new to competitive play. You can easily participate and win in this meta without any rare Pokémon.
Remember that while there are specific Pokemon that dominate this meta, with the Go Battle League (and player vs. player battles in general), you’ll be going blind; So even if you cover yourself with a wide range of offensive and defensive options, no team is invincible.
Still, even with a few of the Pokémon below on your team, you should be able to fare better than if you just picked the ones that come as close to the 1500 CP cap as possible.
The Season of Mythic Wishes saw the release of Kecleon in Pokémon Go! The Lunar New Year event is also back for 2023! Don’t forget to participate in the new season of Go Battle League. Elsewhere, be sure to use Daily Adventure Incense for the chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres.
Our Pokémon Go Electric Cup recommendations
There’s no “best” team you can choose – since, as mentioned before, you don’t know what you’re up against – and not everyone has access to every species of Pokemon.
Instead, here’s a general list of recommended Pokemon for the Electric Cup to build a team from, with a wide range of sources that should suit all players, whether you’ve been collecting creatures since day one or just to start playing. Also, even if you don’t have a Victini, you can still be very competitive in this cup, because (for once) none of our picks have an exclusive move or Community Day. As long as you have the Pokemon and enough resources to power it up, you should be good to go!
Remember that you are only allowed one of each in the Go Battle League, and ideally you would want to build a team with different type strengths and defense. For example, if you build a team with all mono-electric types, your opponent’s entire team will resist yours.
It’s also worth noting that if you really want to compete, each of your Pokémon needs two charged moves. If you want to skimp on Stardust and only perform one move, do so at your own risk – you’ve been warned.
Our Pokémon Go Electric Cup team recommendations in order of appearance in the National Pokédex – although there is some overlap with the Great League guide, be sure to read the full entry as we may recommend some movement changes:
Electrode
Type: Electric
Perfect IVs: 00/15/15
Weakness: Ground
Moves: Volt Switch (Fast), Foul Play (Charged), Hyper Beam (Charged)
Both Electrodes are also excellent in this meta, but let’s start with Kantonian and then move on to the shiny new version in a second. Both have different attacks and perfect IVs, as well as matches, so don’t treat them as interchangeable.
Kantonian Electrode is a spammy, albeit clunky, Pokemon that helps you apply a lot of shield pressure. Foul play is here to hit repeatedly with a charged move, and Hyper Beam just hits the opponent with a huge amount of damage.
This translates to wins against Togedemaru, Magnezone, Minun, Lanturn, and Luxray, though you’ll lose to the entire Alolan Geodude family, Galvantula, and Manectric.
hisian electrode
Type: Electric
Perfect IVs: 00/15/15
Weakness: Insect, Fire, Ice, Poison
Moves: Thunder Shock (Fast), Wild Charge (Charged), Energy Ball (Charged)
The shiny new Hisuian Electrode shakes things up by adding Grass typing, and thus wins against the Alolan Geodude family, alongside Luxray, Minun, and Lanturn. On the other hand, he loses to Manectric, Galvantula, Togedemaru and his Kantonian cousin, Electrode.
Hisuian Electrode is a spammy Pokemon that applies decent shield pressure, if low, and is ultimately crippled by being a technically difficult Pokemon to use, thanks to Wild Charge. To be blunt, you’re probably better off treating it like a slightly worse Minun, rather than an Electrode-adjacent Pokémon. Still, it’s a very respectable choice if you’re out of a mouse.
Lanturn
Type: Water / Electric
Perfect IVs: 00/13/14
Weakness: Grass and Ground
Moves: Water Gun (Fast), Surf (Charged), Thunderbolt (Charged)
Lanturn is one of those Pokemon that you shouldn’t be surprised to see – not only is it great in the normal Great League, but it actually comes to the top of this meta thanks to its lack of natural weaknesses – being a type electrical itself, it only takes neutral damage from these attacks instead of the weakness you would get if it was mono-water.
What makes Lanturn excellent in other leagues is reflected here: great volume combined with respectable agility. The downside is that it doesn’t apply much pressure to the shield – nevertheless, when you stay as long as Lanturn, it’s less of an issue.
In terms of matchups, you can expect to beat anything in the Alolan Golem family, as well as Manectric. Losses, on the other hand, include Galvantula, Togedemaru, Luxray, Electrode, and a sneaky Minun with his Grass-type attacks
My
Type: Electric
Perfect IVs: 00/15/14
Weakness: Ground
Moves: Quick Attack (Fast), Grass Knot (Charged), Discharge (Charged)
The less spammy mouse probably makes its only real appearance in Go Battle League in the Electric Cup, where Grass Knot is much more powerful than you might otherwise think.
The quick charge fast attack in Grass Knot will clear out pretty much every water and rock type in the meta, while Discharge is there to just spam enemies who would otherwise be resistant. Underestimate this Pokemon at your peril.
Minun comfortably takes out the Alolan Geodude family, as well as Lanturn, Luxray, and Togedemaru. Losses, meanwhile, come from Manectric, Galvantula, Magnezone, and Electrode.
Lux Ray
Type: Electric
Perfect IVs: 00/15/12
Weakness: Ground
Moves: Hidden Power (Grounded, Fast), Savage Charge (Charged), Psychic Fangs (Exclusive Charge)
What is this meta particularly weak at? Luxray’s fast attack, that’s it.
While Hidden Power is generally a low quality move, the strike makes a huge difference, and this move will help you beat a good chunk of the competition. On top of that, Luxray’s community day move Psychic Fangs will apply a lot of shield pressure as it’s cheap and weakens the opponent’s defense, which helps offset its glass cannon status – lean Top it off with a Shadow Luxray if you can. Finally we have Wild Charge – use it like a Hail Mary because even if it hits hard it will leave your defense in tatters.
In terms of match-ups, you can see wins against Manectric, Togedemaru Alolan Graveler, and Lanturn. Losses, meanwhile, include the likes of Hisuian and Kantonian Electrode, Galvantula, Minun, and Luxio (the previous evolution stage of Luxray).
Galvantula
Type: Bug/Electric
Perfect IVs: 00/15/15
Weakness: Fire and Rock
Moves: Fury Cutter (Fast), Slash (Charged), Energy Ball (Charged)
Galvantula holds two impressive accolades here: first, it’s awesome in Go Battle League, so it’s supposed to be awesome here; and two, it’s not weak to Ground-type attacks.
This makes the spammy spider worth looking into, especially when browsing the matches below. Fury Cutter is a fast charging move that leans into Lunge quite well as it takes out the opponent’s attack, while Energy Ball is a Grass-type move that provides excellent cover against Lanturn.
Speaking of which, you can expect to beat this, both Electrodes, Luxray, and Minun. However, you will fight against Alolan Graveler, Manectric, Togedemaru and Magnezone.
The Electric Cup will take place until Thursday 2 February and finish at the following times:
