How to beat Starcrossed’s first encounter with Sire’s Obligation
You start in a cave system. This is a simple jumping puzzle as you move to the far side. Pay attention to gaps. You should keep an eye out for large bulbous plants. Pulling on them will cause their leaves to temporarily unfold, giving you a platform to ease your path. Once you reach the end with the small Vex detachment, you will arrive in a large open area.
From here, you can move straight ahead (watch out for snipers!), and you’ll soon approach a sealed door guarded by a Phalanx mini-boss. Above his head will be a symbol, and the same symbol will be displayed above the door. There is a pool of light nearby, inside, which grants a buff called Sire’s Obligation. You must have this buff active to damage the Phalanx, killing the Phalanx opens the door.
This introduces a basic mechanic that will repeat several times in this mission:
- See the symbol on the sealed door
- Find the stubborn phalanx taken with the same symbol
- Recovering Father’s Obligation
- Eliminate Phalanx to open the door
Once through the door, you will arrive in another large room. A pool of light will be near the front center of this room. At the far end of this area will be another door, this time sealed with three symbols. You will need to find and eliminate the three stubborn phalanxes of the Taken with these symbols, and you must do so in the order (top to bottom) in which they appear on the door.
The Phalanges are distributed on the left, center and right of the room. You will probably have to return to the Pool of Light several times as you eliminate them. There will be more additions to deal with, and several Cyclops will appear on the various ridges around the area as you progress. Removing them should be a priority.
Once you have defeated all the stubborn phalanxes taken in the correct order, the door will open and you can advance to the next encounter.
How to beat Starcrossed’s second encounter with Dam’s Gift
Soon you will come to the center of some Vex structures. The path ahead from here takes you through a red mist that will kill you over time, don’t enter it yet. Instead, look at the pool of darkness swirling in the center of the room. Entering this path will grant a new buff called Dam’s Gift. The function of this is simple, it makes you immune to red mist until the buff runs out.
This second mechanism is very simple:
- Find an area filled with red mist that you want to cross
- Collect the gift from the dam
- Get through it quickly before the Dam’s Gift wears off
From there, you’ll move straight through narrow corridors and occasionally move in a fairly linear jumping puzzle. When you reach the other side, you will emerge into a large room with another dark pool in the middle. Ahead of you will be doors fogged in red to the left, center, and right.
For the first part of this encounter, you will need to collect Dam’s Gift, enter each of these areas one by one, and defeat a Wyvern. Once the Wyvern has fallen, a Vex node will be exposed which you will then activate. Wyverns are very tough and you will have to race against time to eliminate them before your Dam’s Gift buff expires. The use of your super and/or heavy weapons is strongly encouraged.
Repeat this process for all three areas to activate all three nodes, refreshing the Dam Gift in the center room as necessary. Once all nodes are online, the boss, Ixion, Covetous Mind Minotaur, will appear. There are no special mechanics to this fight, but be wary of any additions Ixion makes, especially the snipers that appear at the front of the room.
Eliminate them all, collect your loot and you are ready to move on.
How to beat Starcrossed’s third encounter with Crowned by Dragons
After another short section of platforming, you’ll come to a large outdoor area, roughly divided horizontally into three areas. In the middle section is a pool of darkness, giving you the Gift of Dam. The left section will have a pool of light, granting the Sire’s Obligation, if you collect both, you will then receive a new buff called Crowned by Dragons, which combines the effect of both. The timer will reset every time you enter either pool of light, but if it expires completely you’ll have to bring the two together again.
The left area has a door sealed by three Ahamkara symbols, similar to the first encounter. You will once again need to seek out and eliminate three stubborn phalanxes of the Taken in the correct order to pave the way to the final boss. One will appear in the central section, the other two will pass through the doors in the left and right areas sealed by red dust, which is why the double effect of Crowned by Dragons is essential.
Use the pools of light to chase away the Phalanxes in order. Be very careful not to eliminate a Phalanx in disorder, this resets the encounter. This is particularly easy to do with the Middle Phalanx, since it is exposed.
Once all three Phalanxes are dispatched, the door to the Ahamkara Symbol will open and you can head towards the boss of the mission.
How to beat the final boss of Starcrossed, Akardon, Pitiless Mind
As expected, the final battle of the Starcrossed mission touches on the mechanics learned so far. Akardon, Pitiless Mind is a large Vex Hydra, and the splash damage from its cannons can quickly tear a Guardian apart.
As soon as you enter the door and jump into its area there will be pools of light and darkness, use them to immediately apply Crowned by Dragons. Most of the boss room is filled with red mist, and you will both benefit from buffs to stay alive and damage the boss.
Akardon himself is a strong Hydra, but quite unremarkable. Long-range attacks programmed to hit into openings though its rotating shields will do a lot of damage. There will be some additions to watch out for. Yellow health bar phalanxes called Pitiless Attendants will be found on the far left and right of the map, guarding the pools of light and darkness. Remember, if you hit either pool before Crowned by Dragons expires, it will renew the entire buff.
Keep your buff active, maintain fire on the boss, and watch for arrests, which trap you in a barrier that you need to shoot out of. You can use the pillar to the right of the room for cover. Keep doing this and Akardon will fall.
Move forward to collect your loot (and the Wish-Keeper bow if it’s your first time) and enjoy the thrill of victory.
