Variable dice is an item that allows you to reroll substat buffs (subsidiary stats) for your level 15 5-star relics in Honkai: Star Rail.
This means that starting with version 3.0 of Honkai: Star Rail, we can now once again attempt to improve relics that might have improved unnecessary substats while leveling them up. I know I'm going to use it to try and get rid of all those defense upgrades that like to ruin my critical rate and critical damage needs…
To get the substats you want on a relic in the first place, you can now also choose up to two custom substats when creating a relic, thanks to the new Wishful Resin item also introduced in version 3.0 .

What are variable dice?
The Variable Die is a consumable item that you use to reroll substat upgrades for level 15 5-star relics in Honkai: Star Rail. You are not rerunning these statistics, but simply as they were. upgraded on the way to level 15.
Variable Dice was added to Honkai: Star Rail during its big 3.0 patch, along with Wishful Resin, an item you can use to select custom Relic substats.
How to get variable dice in Honkai Star Rail
Here are all the ways you can get variable dice in Honkai: Star Rail:
- Claim Free Rewards
- Convert your self-modeling resins into variable dice
- Unlock on the Battle Pass premium track (Nameless Honor)
Variable Dice are much harder to obtain than Wishful Resin and Self-Modeling Resin, but you can obtain one consistently every patch by purchasing the premium track of the Battle Pass. Beyond that, you rely on free rewards (like Mem's Gift from 3.0) or convert a lot of self-modeling resin.
Convert self-modeling resins
You can obtain variable dice by converting your self-modeling resins from the “Material Synthesis” tab of the “Synthesize” menu. This is done at a ratio of 3:1, so you get one variable die for every three self-modeling resins you use. Unlike Wishful Resin, there is no monthly cap on converting your self-modeling resin into variable dice – probably because it's very expensive!
You can obtain Self-Shaping Resin through Battle Pass rewards, participating in limited-time events, and spending your Jade Feather currency in the “Pranks Come True” tab of the “Priceless Gems” store “. You can access this store in the Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow game modes, and these are also the modes you need to challenge to get Jade Feathers.

How to use variable dice in Honkai Star Rail
To use variable dice in Honkai: Star Rail, you can either select a relic from the “Relics” tab of your inventory, or from a character's “Relics” tab, then select the “Reroll” option in the lower right corner of the screen. Select “Reroll” again from the next menu, confirm your choice, then watch your substat buffs change!
You can choose to keep the original or upgrade to the new stat upgrades after using a variable die, but variable dice will be used even if you decide to keep the original stat boosts.
Another thing to note is that if the Relic already has three sub-stats before being upgraded, then the new stat obtained after three levels of upgrade will be the only one to be rerolled. Beyond that, it's very important to remember that variable dice cannot modify existing substats that are already on your relic. So don't go wasting one in the hopes of rerolling the stat types themselves! It's just a substat of Relic upgrades that variable dice can change.
