How to get Jolan and Anna Spirit Ash
There are several steps to take in order to obtain Jolan and Anna’s Spirit Ash, and most of them involve following the respective quests of Count Ymir and Jolan Swordhand of the Night, with certain decisions you make at the end of Jolan’s quest determining whether or not you’ll be able to obtain this rare Spirit Ash. Below, we’ve outlined the different steps you’ll need to take in order to obtain Jolan and Anna’s Spirit Ash so that you have a simple and short summary to follow:
- Reach Manus Metyr Cathedral in Scadu Altus and begin Ymir’s quest.
- Use the Ruins Map to visit the Fingers of Rhia Ruins and ring the bell hanging there.
- Return to the cathedral and talk to Jolan and Ymir until they exhaust their dialogue.
- Get the O Mother gesture from Bonny Village.
- Use the O Mother gesture on the statue near the back door of Shadow Keep to open the path to the Scaduview Hinterlands.
- Visit the ruins of Dheo’s Fingers in the hinterland and ring the bell hanging there.
- Return to Manus Metyr Cathedral and talk to Jolan and Ymir until you have exhausted their dialogue.
- Rest at the Grace Site inside the cathedral and once Ymir has disappeared, interact with her throne to reveal a hidden staircase beneath the cathedral.
- Go down below the cathedral and defeat Anna Swordhand of the Night when she appears as an invader.
- Go back to Jolan and tell him you were attacked.
- Go back under the cathedral and ring the bell hanging there.
- Defeat the Remembrance boss, Metyr, Mother of Fingers.
- Return to the Cathedral and Jolan will fight you as an invader. Defeat her in combat, then defeat Ymir when he also appears as an invader.
- Rest at the Site of Grace and speak to Jolan again near the pillar.
- Give him the Iris of Grace to obtain his Spiritual Ashes.
- Fast travel to the Scaduview Hinterland to Grace’s “Hinterland” site and head southeast up the hill to the Shaman Village.
- Roll to the end of the Shaman Village cliff and descend along the cliff wall using the available ledges until you can reach the top of Rabbath’s Rise.
- Interact with Anna’s puppet near the pile of books and insert it into Jolan’s ashes to create Jolan and Anna’s spirit ashes.
That’s a summary of how you get the Jolan and Anna Spirit Ash, but read below for a more detailed walkthrough on where you need to go and what you need to do to claim it for yourself.
How to get Jolan’s ashes
To obtain Jolan Swordhand of the Night’s Spirit Ash, you will need to follow his quest until the endand make sure to give him the iris of grace when prompted.
This is important, because choosing the other option and giving him the Iris of Occultation will only give you Jolan’s Sword of the Night armament as a reward for completing his quest, and will permanently prevent you from obtaining his spiritual ashes.
What to do at the end of Jolan’s quest:
Jolan’s quest is fairly straightforward to complete compared to other NPC quests in Shadow of the Erdtree. As long as you return to the Cathedral and talk to her after ringing every bell hanging in Rhia’s Finger Ruins and Dheo’s Finger Ruins, you don’t have much else to do with her until after the Metyr, Mother of Fingers fight.
When you return to the Cathedral after defeating Metyr, the Mother of Fingers, interact with Ymir’s Throne again and Jolan will invade your world and fight you. She will accuse you of injuring Ymir “irreparably” by defeating Metyr, and reveal that he now wants you dead. Charming.
Jolan isn’t too difficult to defeat compared to other Elden Ring bosses. Her blade will inflict a buildup of blood loss, but she doesn’t have any fancy attacks, and her basic sword swings and diagonal jumps are both very easy to avoid. She’ll go down fairly easily, but be careful, as Ymir will invade your world to fight you as soon as Jolan is defeated, so make sure you’re ready for this second boss fight before he begins his assault.
Count Ymir, Mother of Fingers He has a full boss-like health bar to deal with, as well as all sorts of sorcery spells to throw at you. He can also summon Fingercreeper enemies to overwhelm you, which we recommend taking out as soon as possible so you can focus on Ymir.
If you’re smart, you can use Ymir’s throne (and the other larger columns in the cathedral) to mitigate and avoid some of his spell damage, as it can serve as a handy pillar to absorb some of his magic attacks. Again, he’s not a particularly difficult opponent. His defense is very low, and he should go down pretty easily. The only thing you’ll need to watch out for is his large finger shield, as this spell can rise up from the ground beneath you to hit you while defending Ymir from damage. However, it’s easily avoided if you keep your distance, which isn’t difficult since he teleports around the arena a lot.
Once Ymir is defeated, rest at the Grace Site in the cathedral. When you get back up, you will find Jolan slumped against her usual pillar in the main part of the cathedral. This is where you will need to give her the Grace Iris to obtain her Spirit Ash.
How to get Iris of Grace
If you are unable to give her the Iris of Grace, it means you have not found her yet.so you will need to select ‘Exit’ and go get it first. To obtain the Iris of Grace, fast travel to the Grace Site’Warehouse, first floor” in the Shadow Dungeon, and use the elevator inside the first hallway you see on your left to the west.
Turn right at the bottom of the elevator and head down the stairs into a room filled with living jar monsters. Enter the second section of the room and turn left to head to the back of the room. You’ll find the Iris of Grace next to an altar in the dark.
Then quickly return to the cathedral to give it to Jolan so she can see the stars and the sky again.
How to get Anna’s ashes
Now that you have obtained Jolan’s Ashes, fast travel to the Grace Site.Countryside” and go up the hill towards the southeast.
At the top of the slope you will reach the Shamans’ Village. There are several things to discover there if you haven’t visited yet, including: Erdtree minor Cast spell from the center of the glowing flower field near its entrance (which continuously heals allies in the area), as well as Golden braid talisman near Marika’s statue in the hollow tree to the south (which maximizes holy damage negation), and Marika’s Rune just above the field of glowing flowers on the ledge (which gives you 80,000 runes).
However, your main goal here is to travel all the way to the tip of the shaman village, until you see this small passage in the jagged rock face:
Follow the path and use the ledges to carefully descend several levels of the cliff face. If you’re unsure where to drop, just look for areas of grass that indicate where you can safely drop.
Eventually you will see the tallest spire of Rabbath’s Rise appear next to you and when you reach the bottom of the grassy ledges you should be able to see a stone balcony jutting out from the Rabbath’s Rise tower next to you.
Head down to the balcony and you’ll see that you’re now on a small catwalk above the upper room inside Rabbath’s Rise. The body of Anna Swordhand of the Night is slumped in front of you next to a pile of books. It’s unclear why she’s here, or why she invaded your world to fight you in the first place, but unfortunately, such answers aren’t available here. All you can do here is interact with this “puppet”, and you’ll be able to “enter” Anna into Jolan’s spiritual ashes.
Congratulations! You’ve just transformed your Jolan Spirit Ash Swordhand of the Night into Jolan and Anna Spirit Ash, giving you two warriors for the price of one. Well, sort of. The Jolan and Anna Spirit Ash has a higher FP cost of 132 compared to the FP cost of 90 for summoning Jolan, so I guess it’s more of a “buy one, get one half price” kind of deal (and if you find it too much of a hassle to summon both, you can always transform it back into Jolan by interacting with Anna’s corpse again – it’s a repeatable action, giving you plenty of flexibility to switch between them if you want).
Either way, you now have one of the rarest Spirit Ashes in all of Elden Ring DLC, so go celebrate by taking it for a spin against one of the Shadow of the Erdtree bosses.
