There are different strengths of axes in Sons of the Forestused to cut down trees, wooden structures, plants, and they can also be used as weapons.
At the time of writing, there are only three axes in the game, but that may change with future updates.

Sons of the Forest’s best ax explained
The Tactical, Modern, and Fire axes all do the same thing: cut down trees, wooden structures, and plants. You can also use them as weapons if you wish.
However, the speed and damage stats for each ax are different.
The best ax in Sons of the Forest for its damage is the fire axe, while the best ax for speed is the tactical axe. The Modern Ax lands in the middle of these, balancing speed and damage.
You can hover over items in your inventory to see their stats. The green represents the speed, the red the damage and the yellow bar the effectiveness of its defense.
So the best ax is depending on how you use it. That said, we think the Modern Ax is the best all-rounder, but the damage on the Fire Ax is sometimes worth the speed loss, especially when chopping down trees! Just make sure to time your swing well if you’re up against an enemy.
Sons of the Forest Tactical Ax Location
The tactical ax is the easiest to find, because you get it from the emergency pack found right at the start of any game. Just open it in your inventory (press “I”) to get your tactical axe, along with your GPS locator, lighter, and guidebook.
Sons of the Forest Modern Ax location
The modern ax is located in a campsite in the northwest of the island, between the two large rivers that cross here. When you start hearing music, you’ll know you’re near.
When you arrive at camp, you’ll find the Modern Ax lodged in an unlucky corpse just outside a tent. Once you’ve picked it up, you can then access your inventory to equip or shorten it.

Sons of the Forest Fire Ax Location
The Fire Ax in Sons of the Forest will take you the longest to get, as you need to get the shovel first in order to access its location.
Once you have the shovel, head to the green circle on the bend in the river marked on your GPS locator in the northwest area of the mapsouth of the river flowing from the beach.
Use the shovel to dig up the circular area of dirt surrounded by surveying equipment. It will take a bit of time, but eventually you will dig up a bunker.
Go down the ladder and walk to the end of the hall, where you’ll find the fireman’s ax in a display case on the wall.
Before you exit, you might want to grab the keycard from the other room in this bunker. There is also a 3D printer in the same room, where you can make many useful tools, including a flask to hold water.
Is the climbing ax in Sons of the Forest?
Nothe climbing ax doesn’t appear to be in Sons of the Forest at the time of writing, but we believe it will come in a future update.
The Climbing Ax can be seen in an official inventory screen image, which is why we believe it’s still coming to the game.
We don’t know when that will be, and the developers’ plans could change, so for now you’ll have to make do with other climbing gear currently in Sons of the Forest.
