How to prepare for Zhang Bao in Wo Long Fallen Dynasty
At this point in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, you’re probably very aware that preparing yourself before entering a boss battle is one of the main things you need to do to beat the boss itself.
In the case of a fight against Zhang Bao, we recommend that you do six things before approaching the Earth General:
- Fill your dragon healing pots – Having small extra health boosts on hand will help you survive the fight.
- Get your morale to 20 or more – Zhang Bao’s morale is between 17 and 18 when you enter the fight. If your morale is 20 or higher, you will notice that the fight is much easier. There are plenty of banners and enemies around so you can farm this quickly.
- Have a ranged weapon and ammo – Fighting this boss from a distance will make the first half easier, especially when it comes to dodging their attacks.
- Upgrade your own weapon – Visit the blacksmith earlier in the level and upgrade your weapons if any of them have a damage stat lower than 150. It is possible to beat the boss with a lower level weapon, but a higher damage stat high will make things easier.
- Have at least one of each type of sorcery spell – Magic attacks are one of the main ones used by Zhang Bao, so it is essential to have your own magic to counter them.
- Use battle flags and marking flags to increase your courage rank – Having a higher strength rank will make it easier to fight against Zhang Bao.
Once you feel you’ve prepared enough, it’s time to fight the Earth General.

How to beat Zhang Bao in Wo Long Fallen Dynasty
Beating Zhang Bao begins by learning their attacks and attack patterns to lower their Spirit Level, then using that knowledge to lower their Health. Similar to fighting previous bosses, you’ll want to carry Zhang Bao’s spirit bar and then attack them.
For most of the battle, you’ll ideally want keep your distance from Zhang Bao as Guan Yu and Zhang Fei launch into their attacks. This gives you a window to use your ranged weapon (we used a crossbow) to erode Zhang Bao’s spirit and health or to heal if necessary.
That being said, when they are ready, unleash your divine beast on the Earth General. At this point, we had Qilin from the fight with Zhuyan.
The most important thing to know is that Zhang Bao can teleport across the battlefield and end up almost above you to attack you if you’re not careful. We highly recommend use your target tracker throughout the fight to keep an eye on them. Even if they teleport, the tracker will pick them up so you can know where they are at all times.
Additionally, halfway through the fight, they will summon four Warlocks that will spawn in the corners of the battlefield. At this point, move away from Zhang Bao and let the brothers attack them while you deal with the Warlocks. Take down all the Warlocks quickly as they will cause you serious problems.
As you did to fight the other bosses, if you bring down Zhang Bao’s spirit and health enough they will be briefly vulnerable. As soon as this happens and you see the red circle appear on it, use your spirit attack to remove some of their health.
Now, all of this is only useful if you know how to anticipate incoming attacks and know which ones to parry, dodge, counter, as well as which ones are out of control.
Attacks you can parry or dodge
These are all the attacks that Zhang Bao uses that you can dodge, counter, or parry. Once you know the basics of them and how to deal with them, you can avoid them while munching on the general spirit of the Earth.
One of the attacks they use the most is the fire-based one where they send rings of fire
Fire seems to be this boss’ favorite, as it can also send it in several straight lines in front of them. Again, they’re easy to avoid by jumping over them or using a water spell.
The next attack is a “Spinning Blade”. This is where Zhang Bao suddenly, and very quickly, goes turn around while holding your gun to cut you off. You can parry this attack but it’s a safer option to dodge out of the way and wait for an unguardable before moving.
Another magic attack they use will actually tell you it’s coming. Whether the ground under your feet begins to glowquickly use your dodge and dash to get out of the circle. This indicates that a magic attack from the ground or from above (it can be either) will arrive in a few seconds, so you need to react quickly to get to safety.
Zhang Bao will also use another magic attack that will send red orbs around them. These orbs appear in a semi-circle and they will track your location, so even if you move, they will follow you. We advise you parry them or dodge if you have enough wits. If you don’t have a lot of wits, dodging them can leave you vulnerable, so choose wisely.
Uncontrollable attacks
These are the uncontrollable attacks (red) that Zhang Bao uses in combat. You can’t parry them, but if you counter them at the right time, you can launch a powerful counterattack on Zhang Bao. These are the attacks that will help you bring them down.
If you’ve ever fought a warlock in this area, this magic attack should be familiar to you. Zhang Bao will stop, their hand will turn red briefly and then throw a large object yours.
Just before the object hits You, use your counter order
The next Uncontrollable is a bit trickier to get the counter timing right, but if you manage it, it will help you bring down the Earth General very quickly.
Zhang Bao will turn almost entirely red then suddenly disappear. They will then reappear in a different direction than you are facing before charging in to grab you. If they get their hands on you, that’s pretty much the end of your fight as they can wipe out over half your health in one move.
To counter this attack, you must wait for them to reappear. This is where the tracking feature comes in handy, as it will show you exactly where they are and you should have plenty of time to turn to them.
As soon as Zhang Bao appears emptiness, press your counter order send a counterattack. If timed at the right time, they’ll briefly turn their back on you and you can land a few good heavy hits before they calm down.
The only uncontrollable we recommend to avoid is where Zhang Bao stands still, glows, then brings large dark red spikes from the ground. If you get caught in these, they’ll pierce you, and countering them offers little advantage over the other two out-of-control attacks.
