Hello Xbox Wire! You may have seen it already: the vampire is out of the coffin (the equivalent of “the cat is out of the bag” for those who are fluent). Vampire Survivor): Our game will get a 4-player couch co-op mode on August 17th! In a free update! Be awesome with your best friends!
In today’s post, we wanted to explain in more detail how co-op will work, why we’re adding it to the game, and some new details on what to expect when the co-op update arrives.
Let’s start with what the co-op update will look like. Imagine this: A dog, a tree, and an old man smelling of garlic and death itself meet at a dairy. And they turn the entire screen into a wild bullet hell! What sounds like a joke will soon be just a normal stage Vampire Survivor – well, normal for Vampire Survivor Standards and hopefully fun playing!
The co-op update allows you to continue your save file and add more co-op players on the character select screen before starting a level. Have up to three local friends join you and play the whole thing Vampire Survivor Saga including all characters, weapons, updates, DLCs, achievements and more. Basically, the entire game gets a fully optional local co-op mode!
Now that the basics are covered, here are some more detailed couch co-op gameplay glimpses for readers who are familiar with the game:
- Each player can choose one character, and that character can only be chosen once. Having four Poes, O’Soles, or Sigmas on screen would just implode the universe. Similar to single player mode, once you’ve played a stage, you can choose new characters.
- Leveling up works a little differently in couch co-op. The XP bar remains the same, but players take turns leveling up. If one of your companions is eliminated early, their level up will be passed on to the next player.
- Speaking of untimely endings, if one of your faithful companions dies in couch co-op, it turns into a coffin. Over time they will come back to life, but make sure you keep the coffin clear if you can, because who knows what the consequences will be if enemies flood it…
- You can choose weapons as you level up, as always, but the number of weapons you can have depends on how many friends are playing. That means you have to decide who picks which weapon for maximum survival time, but for maximum mayhem you can close your eyes and pick anything!
- There are no couch co-op specific achievements! We wanted to make sure you could unlock co-op achievements by playing with friends if you want, but don’t have to. You can always play the entire game in single player mode as before.
- The game still takes place on a single screen, so you’ll need to tactically agree with your teammates on where to go next and which locations on the map are best for your battles.
There is also a new article:
- We’re excited to reveal: The Amulet of Friendship! This item can appear on the level-up screen and increases a random weapon in the level for each player. Players must choose between tactically (or selfishly) leveling up a weapon of their choice, or giving the whole party a round of random leveling.
Finally, we’d like to answer the question of why we’re adding co-op in the first place. The answer is surprisingly simple: we gave the game a name Vampire Survivor but it felt a bit strange that it’s only a game for a vampire survivor; With co-op, we can finally appreciate the “s” at the end Vampire Survivor!
Seriously, co-op has been a highly requested community feature and was at the top of our list of things to try, mostly because we think it’s super fun! Some of our favorite games are local co-op games. We believe games played with friends on the sofa can create the best gaming memories. So we wanted to make sure it would work despite whatever challenges it might throw at it (and got up like a vampire in the night, which they did)!
In converting a single player experience into a couch co-op experience, we had to answer a lot of gameplay questions. We hope you feel that we made the right conclusions and that you enjoy the new mode! We always welcome feedback from the community. So join us on Twitter or Discord and let us know your thoughts. We’ve already heard that many players have been asking for an online mode, but that’s an order of magnitude or two more complicated at the moment. Maybe we’ll look at that when we have more time. Or maybe we already are?
There are still a few things we haven’t talked about that you can discover when the co-op update arrives on August 17th. But we can tell you right now that there are some ways to get some revenge on your friends (it’s called co-op, but we’re never against friendly trolling).
Vampire Survivor is available today for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC (with Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass). Couch Co-op will be available as a free patch on August 17th.
