One title that could turn hot and cold this Sunday is Explained. Obsidian Entertainment’s production might show an ambition to make it an AAA when it’s first presented. From what the Sunday show presented, it would be more of an AA explaining some players’ disappointment with the idea they had.
Carrie PatelGame Director of the title, was present during the Xbox Games Showcase Extended to provide additional information about the game.
The place occupied by the Pillars of Eternity in Avowed
From the start, Carrie emphasizes the similarities with pillars of eternity. In another studio production, we already knew that the two licenses share the same universe. Still, the parallels would be numerous. characters and factions pillars of eternity
The story takes place in the Living Lands, a remote location in Eora. The video presented on Sunday also shows a character speaking to us. Carrie confirms that it is indeed a companion, in the spirit of the studio.
This is Kai, one of the first companions you will meet in the game. An Aumaua, the unique species of the world of Eora, Kai is a character that strikes a balance between being a very experienced soldier who has seen a lot, has served as a soldier and a mercenary, but also has a very high sensitivity.
A completely different mission
Unlike his eldest, we will not embody a guardian of the gods. Certainly we will have a unique form of soul connection with the world, but our role is not simply divine.
[…] Acting as an emissary for the Aedyr Empire, the player brings with him a very mysterious aura, but also a certain sense of political urgency.
Not to mention the plague that spreads across these areas, contaminating the fauna and flora. Without going into too much detail, Carrie provides some details about this disease:
There’s not much I can say at the moment other than that it’s a soul plague that is devouring the living lands and part of the player’s mission is to investigate and stop this plague.
Transcribe the codes of first-person asymmetrical gameplay
Isometric view RPGs are known for having very specific characters in their field. Carrie Patel explains that she wanted to take this approach while also adapting it to the playstyle dictated by the first-person view.
So we wanted to leverage the same depth and breadth of playstyles, combat skills, and player imaginations so that you can play someone very knowledgeable about magic, a more traditional fighter, or a ranger, and really invest in the playstyle that appeals to you the most personal.
It also allows you some freedoms, like holding pistols in a heroic fantasy universe.
[…] As you’ve noticed, dual pistol wielding is one of my favorites because you don’t see it often in fantasy RPGs, but so does the traditional sword and plank, a whole host of magical abilities, and lots of things that will both be somewhat familiar , but hopefully also new for the players.
After all, the lifespan is closer to games like The Outer Worlds About what Skyrim. Carrie explains that the title is more “A series of interconnected open areas that players can explore at their own pace.«
Explained is planned for 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass.
