With the HS65 Surround, Corsair aims to establish itself as one of the safe bets in sub-$100 headsets. A goal that is far from easy to achieve, due to numerous and already very established competitors. Thanks to its sound and processing qualities, however, Corsair masters the challenge with flying colours. Between powerful and accurate audio, microphone with impeccable clarity and pleasing design, the HS65 Surround is quite simply a hit!
A good head
Far from Microsoft’s standards in this area, the packaging of the new Corsair gaming headset is extremely classic. When opened, a plain cardboard sleeve protects the HS65 Surround including the USB adapter, giving the whole thing a rather “cheap” first impression. Nevertheless, the main thing lies elsewhere and it only takes a first contact with the helmet to understand it.
The HS65 Surround seduces as soon as you touch it. The perceived quality is excellent, starting with the synthetic materials chosen to dress the accessory. Whether it’s the headband, headphones or microphone, all the parts of the helmet are indeed very soft and pleasant to the touch, giving the whole a very good overall finish.
We like to handle the object and at no time do we have the feeling that we are holding a plastic toy. Especially since the overall aesthetics are very successful even in a sober style.
Available in two colors, black or white, the HS65 Surround is more understated. It is therefore very natural to wear, whether you are playing at home or enjoying your music outside. The only eccentricity Corsair allows itself is the integration of its metal logo on each headset. A rather elegant detail, a real signature of the brand.
and good ears
On the comfort side, Corsair also pays attention to its product here. The foams of the on-ear headphones are rather generous (25mm) and flexible enough not to put uncomfortable pressure on the eardrum.
In addition, if the entourage of these foams offers one of the most classic eco-leathers, the interior is in fabric. The area in contact with the skin is thus “breathable”, which allows air to pass easily, avoiding phenomena of increased perspiration.
The proposal is also convincing for the bow. The 15mm memory foam does its job and lets the helmet sit softly on your head. A comfort that lasts even during long sessions of use, thanks in particular to the featherweight of the HS65: barely 280 grams!
The headset that whispered in gamers’ ears
Once in the game, Corsair’s seduction operation continues. Thanks to never-failing 50mm drivers, the HS65 Surround delivers clear sound in any screen situation. Mids and highs are perfectly managed and mastered, while bass makes a real impact. The sound environment is really very good, especially at this price point.
On PC and Mac, the Corsair HS65 Surround also offers spatialization capabilities. This requires using the 3.5mm jack to USB adapter and using the manufacturer’s in-house software: iCue.
The latter is a true control platform for Corsair accessories and offers a variety of settings for the HS65. Unfortunately, most remain anecdotal and only the equalizer and mic boost option are essential.
These two menus allow you to optimally configure your headphones to enjoy the sound that suits you. Adjust the sensitivity of your microphone. Of course, various presets are available to change your environment in a split second.
A helmet suitable for everyday use
Outside of gaming, the HS65 Surround is also very good! Thanks to its excellent audio balance, you can listen to your music in optimal conditions. And when you’re chatting, its microphone ensures perfect communication!
The microshaft positioned on the left atrium is designed to be completely flexible. This makes it possible to position it ideally close to the lips in order to guarantee a very good understanding of what you say to your friends in your circle of friends. Only the end of the stem is rigid as the latter houses the microphone.
If it’s easy to position, it’s also easy to cut. Corsair uses a rocker bar here and all you have to do is raise your microphone to break the communication. Practical and fast, just like the sound management via a wheel on the back of the hull. Classic for sure, but always well executed here.
Excellent, no less
Ultimately, there is nothing to criticize about the Corsair headset. The HS65 Surround does exactly what is expected of it and does it very well. The manufacturer here signs a gaming headset that is as comfortable to wear as it is to listen to, with the luxury of making it better than its competitors. Additionally, nearly 15 days after arriving home, the HS65 Surround has become my go-to headset, serving both for my gaming sessions and to isolate myself from music during my workdays. The ideal companion with an excellent price-performance ratio that fulfills its purpose in all circumstances.
So, of course, at $89.99, don’t expect any other features. This price and services require you to agree to a wired connection between your controller and headset. You also have to check the management of the sound/voice balance in the headphones or even that the headphones don’t bend to better carry your accessories. However, if it’s the sound that predominates in your choice, you can go there with your eyes closed.
