Clunky Hero is a more than decent platformer with a metroidvania structure that will keep us glued to the screen for a generous number of hours
Metroidvania-style games are all the rage today, especially in the indie world. Clunky Hero is the new representative of this genre. Developed and published by Chaosmonger Studio, after going through early access on PC, it’s now up to Xbox to receive this fun adventure. We control Rufus, a medieval hooligan hero who must save his wife, Brunildesince a being called El Maligno transformed her into a blonde with lip surgery (yes, she’s serious). As we can see, the game will have a very hooligan humor, with daring and very black jokes, which suit the player very well. Title.
A very hooligan medieval world
If we talk about the story of the game, it is very simple, since it revolves around the salvation of Rufus’ wife. But where he wins it all is in humor. And that’s all the adventure will be accompanied by a very bizarre and dark humor, whether with jokes made by our protagonist or other characters, or the enemies themselves
A world full of dangers
In the playable part of the title, we find ourselves in front of a platform with a metroidvania structure of a lifetime. There will be many jumps, enemies to defeat, skills that we will learn as the story progresses, and final area bosses. There are many types of enemies in the game, but the problem is that they are aesthetically different, when in reality there are only 5 or 6 types. And it is that a goblin and a skeleton are totally different in terms of aesthetics, but functionally they are the same enemy, since they have the same attack. There are enemies that attack with a melee weapon, others that spit, others that throw themselves at you… and with these mechanics they change their skin to avoid repetitions. As for the final bosses, things can also be improved, since they only have two or three different attacks each.. Maybe the first time we face a boss we will die, because we don’t know his two or three attacks, but once they are learned, it’s child’s play. One thing I didn’t like about the game It’s the game camera, which on many occasions is misplaced, not allowing a good view of what’s happening on screen.
In the title we can also find secret rooms with treasures, quite well hidden, as well as merchants to buy improvements or healing elements. If we talk about saving the game, there is no autosave, so you have to save yourself in some kind of streetlights there are in the different worlds, increasing the difficulty of the game.
The game has some 6 different locations, which we can access if we have the necessary power, such as double jump, lunge, trample… We will obtain these powers by defeating an area boss or completing a mission. The game matters too with different weapons, potions that increase our abilities… The game is quite complete on this aspect. The duration of the main story lasts about 10 or 12 hours, and 15 to 20 if we are completists. Although we spend many hours wandering the world without knowing where to go, because in this aspect the game is very confusing.
Quirky and cute characters
If we refer to the graphic aspect of the game, it conforms to it correctly. The character and enemy designs are very well done and look great. They have a very pleasing cartoon style to look at, fully consistent. If we talk about the scenarios, these have their light and their darkness. And it is that some scenes look very crafted and beautiful, and others look grudgingly done. Also, the different worlds are very similar to each other, except maybe two that have more personality. Regarding the sound aspect, the humble budget that the game had is noticeable. Despite this, it performs well, with some pleasant, if a bit repetitive, melodies and some well-crafted sound effects. It conforms well without excelling at all in this technological aspect.
Awkward conclusions about heroes
Clunky Hero more than delivers on everything it sets out to do. Because metroidvania is a more than good candidate for fans of the genre. Although there are a few flaws here and there that do not allow the title to become an exceptional game. And it is that Clunky Hero exudes a humble air in the graphic and sound aspects, for example, but this That didn’t stop developer Chaosmonger Studio from making a more than interesting title..
