Many times, when we theorize about all the harmful effects of humans on the planet, we talk about the end of the world when in reality it is the end of the human species. It is this self-centeredness that leads us to disaster. The earth will not explode. It will mutate and its nature will grow in a way different from that known. and the remains of humanity will remain.
One Last Breath is a 2.5D puzzle game developed by three Spanish studios (Lunar Studios, Manic Panda Games, Catness Game Studios). They transport us to the end of humanity as we know it. Ruins of the last breaths of a civilization which did the impossible to survive. Leave everything in the hands of a megacorporation. Mutation of the last human beings into deformed beasts with a murderous instinct.
And Gaia took on an anthropomorphic form.
Gaia emerges from the depths of the planet. Earth’s last resort to find the meaning of life. And it is very enlightening to see how, in a green forest, on a sunny day, one begins to gradually delve into the darkest vestiges of humanity. Each phase is a deeper evolution that led man to disaster. Gaia advances through places that tell of the ruins of civilization. Cities, factories and lonely roads invaded by nature but with a gray atmosphere that we, Madridistas, understand very well.
The living beings that Gaia encounters are animals. Ordinary people who recognize and love their savior, and mutated beasts who resent not giving them a break. The first will give the heart to the story, giving warm and hard moments at the same time. The seconds will be Gaia’s obstacle to the outcome. A last sigh of humanity that no longer exists.
Pieces to advance the story.
One Last Breath is a succession of scenes to be solved using a puzzle. Pull levers, push boxes, jump and crouch. The main mechanics of any game of this genre. Added to this are Gaia’s own abilities, such as controlling roots or jumping with a vine. At this point, it seems strange that this is a character who must flee from confrontation with his enemies.
Drink the best works of the genre such as Inside and in limbo. In these cases, the characters are “helpless” children and it is understood that they must run away and hide. With Gaia, it’s different. He has the powers of Earth. If it was more offensive the game would be different and that’s not necessarily the case. But with this character design, he loses strength and tension in dangerous situations due to his condition.
The puzzles that arise in the main story aren’t very difficult. There are none that block in the game. It’s quite light. Although they reminded me of a current debate about video game design and yellow paint. It’s not here, and it shows. The dark/gray tone of the entire game makes it difficult to distinguish any levers or buttons.
Conclusions.
One Last Breath is direct and has a clear message. The Game is short and therefore invites you to discover its different endings. The main ending is easy to achieve. It’s not a complicated game, but it invites you to explore the small possibilities it has. There are precious moments and other moments of rage at what we do as human beings.
