Epic Games has acquired Rad Game Tools.
Epic Games has acquired RAD Game Tools, a video game software development company whose products and technology can be found in nearly 25,000 games and are used by the world’s leading game companies, including Epic. Together, Epic and RAD plan to integrate RAD’s powerful technology into the Unreal Engine, which will benefit the developer community and gamers alike.
“We know firsthand how impressive RAD’s compression technology is as we’ve used it to improve the load time and quality of our most popular games – including Fortnite. The RAD team consists of some of the world’s leading experts in compression, video and game development tools, and we are excited to welcome you to the Epic family, “said Kim Libreri, CTO of Epic Games.
As graphics become more and more photorealistic and powerful in game development and beyond, developers need first-class compression software that can handle increased data demands without sacrificing quality. Members of the RAD team will work closely with Epic’s rendering, animation, insights and audio teams, integrating key technologies and enhancements into the Unreal Engine and beyond. The merger of RAD and Epic will give even more developers access to tools that will make their games load and download faster and provide their players with a better, better quality video and gaming experience.
RAD will continue to support its gaming, film and television partners. The sales and business development team will sell licenses for RAD’s products to companies in a variety of industries – including those who don’t use the Unreal Engine.
“Our collaboration with Epic goes back decades, and the merger is a natural next step given our alignment in products, mission and culture. We both believe that solid technology enables developers to create beautiful, performing, and reliable experiences. We’re excited and honored to be joining the great Epic team, ”said Jeff Roberts, Founder and CEO of RAD Game Tools.
