Sony has confirmed that sales of the PlayStation 5 with drive will no longer come at a loss for the company.
It is an open secret that, especially at the start of a new generation of consoles, manufacturers such as Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo usually make losses with every console sold and rely on good software sales to make a profit. The PlayStation 5 released by Sony in November last year was no exception.
During Sony’s quarterly business conference, CFO Hiroki Totoki announced that the sale of a PlayStation 5 with drive (499 dollars) would no longer result in losses for the company. This is still the case with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (399 dollars), but it can be offset by other hardware sales such as the PlayStation 4 or peripheral devices.
To date, 10.1 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been shipped worldwide. By the end of the current fiscal year, Sony is aiming for a total of 14.8 million units. Totoki also assured that this project will not fail due to a lack of stock of semiconductor chips.
