To the saga dark quest it’s us little known to console users. The saga has three other episodes, and only its second part It arrived in 2019 on Xbox One. After that tiptoe walk from previous iterations, after a year in Early Access on Steamthe final version of dark quest 3 at consoles. The title is a mix of card-based roguelite and turn-based combat, paying homage to tabletop RPGs like Heroquest or Descent.
What is Dark Quest 3?
As I have already advanced, dark quest Mix various genres. First of all, it is a roguelite in which with each “run” we will try to progress more to unlock characters and other extras. Each scenario has its deck of cards, which acts as “master” or “game director”unveiling the letters, they will put us in a context that many times, we can solve in many ways. Of course, depending on whether we have a good hand when rolling the dice.
These situations they are many and varied; some examples are facing an enemy ambush, deciding whether or not to explore a tunnel, meeting a vendor, falling into a trap… In summary, most of the situations we could find ourselves in in a typical dungeon crawler game
Take turns fighting and improving our “party”
We’ll start with the Barbarian, Mage, Warrior, and Archer already available to our party. As we progress through the scenarios, we can pay crystals that we will obtain from the Thieves Guild to unlock more characters, appearances or additional help in the scenarios. Many times, at the end of a fight, we will have two options; improve a single ability or improve the damage of a single character. And almost the entire combat system of the game is based on that, on choosing well and planning short-term or long-term strategies, as it suits us.
When we enter combat we will go to a stage divided into squares, where we will move and act with the characters according to their action points. Here you will also have to tread lightly, because the enemies do not forgive the slightest mistake and are relentless. We will have to choose the order of action of our group very well, since it will often depend on whether our game ends with this fight.
Remember that we are in a roguelite, if we die we will have to start all over again. Although along the way we may have unlocked some improvements that will make our next adventures easier. During the “runs” the different equipment cards that we will obtain will also help, except for the runes, which are only obtained by defeating powerful bosses and will give us a passive improvement.
Technical section, simplicity by flag
Dark Quest 3 bets on simplicity in its visual section, with all the good and bad that entails. Except in battles, the rest of the game will just consist of browsing menus and choosing options. And here I have to put a but, because these menus are quite approximate and the control to navigate them can be greatly improved. It’s one of those games that is made one hundred percent compatible and adapted as they could. The cursor doesn’t move as quickly or finely as we’d like, leading us to make mistakes when choosing the right option repeatedly.
Control during combat suffers the same, and having more wiggle room even makes it worse in this regard. On the other hand, there are no animations of the characters during the attacks except for a simple movement of the “figure” which represents it. What we liked are the portraits and the artistic style chosen for certain scenarios, but of course the technical aspect is the poorest aspect of the title as a whole.
The same cannot be said of the sound, which without being the spotter, poses the situation very well with melodies and sounds for the effects of the cards, launched. Special mention should be made of the voice of the master, who will tell us what is happening during the game and gives a real board game touch to the game.
Dark Quest 3, final conclusions
Brain Seal Limited brings us another numbered episode of its roguelite board saga, which improves on the already known formula of its previous episodes. The game knows how to mix the roguelite genre, card games and turn-based combat with square movement. The title pays homage to dungeon board games in a very good way, even if its rough control is somewhat uncomfortable and weighs down as the hours go by. If you’re the kind of player who likes one of these genres or the theme of the board, and you try it out, there will rarely be a day where I don’t have a run or two. Dark Quest 3 has its strong point in its battle system, upgrades, and unlocks, and if that’s true, everything else can work.
