Gears of War: E-Day is being developed from the ground up by The Coalition in Unreal Engine 5. “A marvel of gameplay, narrative and technology!”
Gears of War: E-Day was the absolute WTF moment at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. The game was announced with an Unreal Engine 5 trailer.
Key to The Coalition’s vision is that E-Day – in another nod to the original game – will be a marvel not only of gameplay and narrative, but of technology as well.
To take Gears of War: E-Day to the next-gen level, the game offers 100 times more environmental and character details than in Gears 5, Hardware ray tracing lighting, reflections and shadows
Game development has come a long way since the first Gears of War game, and with Unreal Engine 5, The Coalition is prepared to take full advantage of that evolution and set new standards in terms of technology.
When the original Gears of War launched, the “Mad World” trailer was a revelation.
Rendered entirely in-engine, it set a new standard for what players could expect directly from their gaming experience – a rarity at a time when the gap between movie trailers and actual game graphics was particularly wide.
By using its own Unreal Engine, Epic Games has not only demonstrated its confidence in the game’s visual and performance capabilities, but has also impressively demonstrated the engine’s capabilities.
“With the advances in Unreal Engine 5, the leap in technical capabilities is enormous,” explains Kate Rayner, Studio Technical Director at The Coalition.
“This includes over 100x more environmental and character detail than in Gears 5, hardware ray-traced light ing, reflections and shadows, next-generation destruction and devastation, and cutting-edge animation technology, to name just a few of the countless improvements that will make Gears of War: E-Day an unparalleled visual experience.
“Our goal is to once again set a new standard in technical excellence,” adds Rayner. “We have modernized Gears from the ground up, combining the DNA of Gears with the full capabilities of modern gaming technology.”
“Every character, environment and animation in Gears of War: E-Day was completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, allowing us to represent the Gears universe with unprecedented detail.”
“The original ‘Mad World’ trailer made a real statement by using in-engine footage. With Unreal Engine 5, we’re taking that a step further,” Rayner continued.
“Our goal with the announcement trailer was to underscore our commitment to pushing the boundaries of both storytelling and technology in games.
Fawcette adds: “If you look at Marcus and Dom from the original games, they are big, beefy tanks that are exaggerated in their design. As you saw in the trailer, these guys are [in E-Day] come to life as human characters.”
The Coalition honors this legacy with the Gears of War: E-Day reveal trailer, which will be available on UnrealEngine5 based on.
