Diplomacy is not an option, is the latest title developed by the independent studio of Gate 407. This game has us jumping sporadically on PC to test the early access of this promising release. Thanks to the team of Cosmocouverwe enter a game that tries to give a more than interesting twist to the classic tower defense genre.
Set in medieval times, we will have to manage resources, construct buildings and recruit new units. All the while we explore its setting and plan defenses for the hordes of enemies to come. On its own, it’s a simple approach, as you’d expect from a game of this genre, but it includes new mechanics that make it something more. If you want to know more about this game, do not miss our impressions.
build and plan
In this first look at Diplomacy is not an option, we found that we already had a complete tutorial, as well as a more than interesting campaign mode. Starting with defending our own kingdom against a village rebellion, we will advance through different chapters where everything will become more and more complicated. I will tell you right away, that the game has a fairly high difficulty even for most players of this type of genre.
Since we started playing, we have noticed that we are faced with a game where planning and resource management are essential. In the resources that the game makes available to us, we find; wood, food, stone and soul fragments. The latter being necessary to cast spells. Regarding the other three, the game offers us different buildings with which to ensure their acquisition. This, yes, on several occasions we will have to explore the map and fight to obtain stone with which to improve our fortifications.
Food, as you can imagine, is a basic resource in the game. And that’s it, as our population increases and we recruit units, food consumption will be greater. Therefore, it is common for us to try to prioritize fishing cabins or pickup stations. However, this is where a differential point comes into play. Diplomacy is not an option. This type of buildings you work in to get a resource, will require residents. The number of inhabitants who can work is limited, although over the days they will increase, also over the days the hordes will approach.
Decision
Because our inhabitants are limited, we will have to prioritize the construction of this or that building. All this added to the constant pressure that the horde is getting closer every day and that if we prioritize building buildings, we won’t be able to recruit units. It is at this point where the player must find the perfect balance between construction, exploration and defense,
Considering the title in question, we must take into account that defense is one of the main mechanisms. For it, the game offers us the possibility of building walls, as well as dense towers where to place our units, or watchtowers with which to gain vision. And that’s it. Although before the attack we are told where the enemy will attack, it is not very precise. Therefore, we must prepare as best we can.
We have several units for our defense, archers and catapults being a fundamental pillar to keep the enemy away from our kingdom. However, we also have infantry that will help us keep the enemy at a point or for exploration processes. In the same form, If we find ourselves in an impasse, we can also resort to summoning spells or others of a more destructive nature. As long as we have enough soul fragments. We have already warned that to obtain this resource we will have to explore the cartography and end the different colonies that are there.
new additions
That said, during the few hours that I was able to enjoy Diplomacy is not an option I found situations that pleasantly surprised me. One of them is the importance of death or rather of burying the dead. And it is that, if one of our inhabitants dies in our city, we will have to bury him or diseases will begin to appear in our dear citizens. Diseases that can be a real disaster for our diets, unless we have a hospital. In other words, it is very easy to lose the whole game if we do not plan all our actions during the game.
This is perhaps the differential point of this title. Because, It’s not enough that we only focus on defenses, but we have to take care of many other factors at the same time. This arguably gives it an extra point of complexity which makes the games much more interesting.
In short, these first hours of play Diplomacy is not an optionThey left a very good taste in my mouth. However, if I missed a little more variety in their buildings and units, even though it’s early access, I’m sure they’ll be coming soon. Without further ado, remember that you have all the news from the Xbox world here.
