EA and Activision Blizzard have dominated Christmas sales in the UK charts for years and nothing will change in 2021.
EA and Activision Blizzard top the UK Christmas sales charts and are the largest publishers in the UK Christmas season overall. GFK’s data shows FIFA and Call of Duty were number 1 for nine different Christmas seasons.
According to a recent market analysis by GFK (via GamesIndustry) of physical retailing of games in the UK, EA and Activision Blizzard have emerged as the top Christmas publishers since 1984.
The two industry giants have topped the list year after year for the past 37 years, and in 2021 they are both almost level in the number of weeks they have spent at the top of the UK Christmas charts from 1984 to today.
Electronic Arts topped the Christmas charts 13 times while Activision rose to the throne 10 times. The reason EA’s popularity is due to its FIFA franchise, which attracts large audiences year after year. FIFA 22 also topped the Christmas charts in 2021. EA had also achieved several top positions in the Christmas charts with Need for Speed and Medal of Honor.
Activision Blizzard first took the top spot in 1984 with Ghostbusters, then in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and in the years thereafter with several other Call of Duty titles.
Other top contenders this Christmas include The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim from Bethesda and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from Nintendo.
