In case the title sounds like something far off and complex to understand, DirecStorage is a Microsoft technology that inherited various elements of the Xbox Velocity architecture to improve the performance of games, but in this case it is designed for PC. It was first announced for Windows 11, but later Americans confirmed that it will be coming to Windows 10 as well.
DirectStorage manages to work with more requests for data and information from games, making it a winner over current storage APIs. Thanks to this, Windows manages to be much more efficient with bandwidth, which results in much faster read and write speeds. Come on, let the games and their data load first.
Forspoken will take advantage of new Microsoft technologies
Today we have a new game that joins the short list of titles that will use this new and innovative technology. Speak. Ironically, the game is not announced for Xbox consoles, and it looks like it will take some time to arrive if it comes because of an exclusivity with Sony consoles. You know, Square plays Square.
The thing is, we know this fact thanks to the GDC 2022 panel, where the game’s development team detailed some of the technologies that will be used in the game.
This session will cover the collaboration between AMD and Luminous Production on their upcoming title: Forspoken. This partnership has resulted in the implementation of several AMD technologies in the game, including screen space ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, ray-traced shadows, and AMD Super Resolution FidelityFX. Besides a brief introduction to these techniques, this talk will detail the process of integration into the Luminous Engine and how AMD and Luminous Productions have worked hand in hand to optimize it on a wide range of AMD GPUs.
Forspoken also supports the new Microsoft DirectStorage API. Part of the session will be devoted to its addition to the game highlighting the challenges the studio has faced and the benefits it brings to the title.
Forspoken is available in the Microsoft Store for PC, now and after knowing this information, it makes more sense to see it there. Maybe in the future we’ll see it on PC Game Pass and hopefully even Xbox Series.
