The long-awaited title of Team Sonic leaves us with mixed feelings.
Sonic Frontiers is due out November 8 on Xbox and PC consoles, but before that we got to get a taste of the game while we were at Tokyo Game Show 2022. Not only did Sega set up a giant Sonic Balloon for everyone everyone can see everyone to marvel and take pictures, but they also had the demo of the expected Sonic borders.
The Sonic Frontiers demo had a duration of about 15 minutes. The game’s demo puts you right into the game’s intro, with Sonic waking up in the Starfall Islands, to whom a mysterious voice tells him to look for his companion to begin his journey. After this scene, we were given the option to choose between action style and high speed style. We were able to switch between any of these styles in Game Settings, so new and veteran Sonic players alike can find the most comfortable control scheme for them.
When people think of Sonic games, they usually go for speed races with the goal of getting to the end as quickly as possible. Although there are levels that retain this classic gameplay, Sonic Frontiers is first and foremost an open-world action title. The freedom of being able to move Sonic around the world wherever you want is exhilarating. The map also includes a bunch of jump pads, speed boosts, and other environmental tools that you can use to move around quickly, making it easier to collect rings and allowing you to go really fast.
Although it is not enough to only use speed in the game. Sonic Frontiers also introduces new puzzle elements in which we must use elements found on the map. It’s a nice and organic way to implement puzzle solving in a Sonic title.
The Starfall Isles are also riddled with these mysterious enemies who, oddly enough, borrow fish design elements. Small enemies are fairly easy to dispatch, though enemy bosses require more attention from the player, requiring them to dodge and time their attacks more carefully.
In general, the 15 minute demo at TGS 2022 was a good introduction what we can expect from the full release and showed that even with an open world title, we can expect Sonic to maintain the same frenzy he’s known for.
However, it should be taken into account that, due to the speed at which Sonic moves and the emphasis on free camera movement and in fixing enemies, some players will feel that the movement is very chaotic at times and may suffer from motion sickness while playing due to the speed at which everything moves. I think it’s something we can get used to, but I can’t wait to get my hands on the final version to check it out.
