Former Starfield lead quest designer Will Shen believes players are tired of games with massive scope.

Like no other development studio, Bethesda stands for games with enormous scope, huge worlds and the potential for hundreds of hours of play full of exploration and side activities.

According to Will Shen, Starfield's former lead quest designer and at Bethesda Game Studios for over 15 years as of October 2023, a concept that no longer resonates with gamers as much as it once did.

In an interview with the YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz Shen, who was also involved in Skyrim and Fallout 4, explains that he believes players are now tired of games of such proportions:

“We're getting to a point where people are getting tired – or a large portion, a growing portion of the audience is getting tired of putting 30 or 100 hours into a game.”

“They already have the games they keep coming back to and adding another game to that list is a big challenge. It’s always a big challenge.”
