Xbox handheld speculation: What Microsoft's patents could reveal about the future of mobile gaming.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has previously confirmed in an official statement that a handheld is in development at Microsoft.
However, the project is currently in the prototyping phase. This means that Microsoft is currently experimenting with different designs and features to create the optimal handheld experience. However, fans will still have to be patient as the handheld is still several years away from a release.
However, some interesting US patents that appeared last year allow conclusions to be drawn about which technologies could currently be in development at Microsoft. When you put these technologies in conjunction with the new handheld, some very interesting speculation emerges.
I am patent US20240426335 from Microsoft is a technology with a flexible display and one innovative hinge mechanism described, which fits well with a portable device that could potentially act as a hybrid between a console and a tablet.
The patent also describes WO2024242870 a force-sensing touchpad that detects pressure levels and consists of a combination of circuit boards, springs and electrodes.
The patent also describes US20240396106 a battery system with integrated charging induction coil, which includes a rechargeable battery, an induction coil, circuits, a ferrite layer and a cover. The induction coil is attached to the battery and enables wireless induction charging.
Additionally, the patent describes US20240426137 a magnetic locking mechanism for device covers, especially for the back of electronic devices.
Based on these patents and available information, Microsoft's Xbox handheld could feature the following technologies:
- design: A compact, foldable device with a flexible display. The hinge would allow for seamless unfolding, similar to a tablet/handheld console hybrid.
- Touchpad: A pressure-sensitive touchpad could provide precise control and additional input options.
- Energy supply: Wireless charging through an embedded battery system would promote mobility and ease of use.
- Magnetic lock: A magnetic locking mechanism that could be used for detachable controllers or handheld accessories. This would allow for quick and secure attachment and detachment of components, similar to the Nintendo Switch, but potentially even more user-friendly.
- Operating system: A combination of Windows & Xbox.
This concept would be based on devices like the Nintendo Switch, the Steam Deck or the AYANEO FLIP, but would stand out with innovative technologies such as foldable displays and wireless charging.
To do this, they want to “combine the best of Xbox and Windows for handhelds” and could therefore provide a Windows interface similar to the Xbox compact mode as the operating system. This operating system, in turn, could be freely installed from other handheld devices, like Steam with SteamOS. As you can see, there is a lot of speculation, but the future is still extremely exciting!
