Garlic is a challenging 2D platformer that will keep you glued to your seat throughout its adventure
In 2021, an unknown title called Garlic was released on Steam. The game developed by the Sylph studio turned out to be a very difficult 2D platformer, reminiscent of titles like Celeste.. Today, two years after its official launch, Garlic is relaunched on Xbox by Ratalaika Games. If you want to know everything about this interesting adventure, in the Xbox community you will have everything you need to know.
A goddess who falls in love
The history of garlic is very simple. As the name suggests, our protagonist is Garlic, a boy with an onion head who wants to climb the so-called sacred tower, since the cybernetic goddess is there, who grants a wish to all who manage to reach the top . Garlic easily reaches the top of the tower, but when he sees the Goddess, he completely falls in love with her, so he must do whatever it takes to try to please her. This simple story It will take us through a multitude of worlds, where we will have to face thousands of enemies and dangers and in which humor prevails above all.
Die, die and die again
Garlic is a 2D platformer with a classic flavor. It is strongly reminiscent of titles like Celeste or Super Meat Boy, which is to say that it is a platform game based on precision. It is absolutely essential to be precise in the jumps to be able to cross the levels and overcome the adventure, especially in the final worlds. It should be noted that in Garlic you will die, a lot. The title is very difficult and any senseless failure will cause you to lose your life. But Although you die a lot during the adventure, the game does not become repetitive or tedious, on the contrary, Garlic’s fun lies in this challenge. The adventure lasts around 12 hours, although Garlic also has a very challenging bosh rush mode as well as the story mode.
Our protagonist is controlled in a very simple and intuitive way. We have a button for jumping and another for dashing, which is as important as the jump itself. The dash, in addition to making you boost and travel a greater distance, can also be used to bounce on the ground or against enemies, this being necessary to overcome many phases. You can also climb walls by pushing yourself with them, although I felt like this mechanic sometimes didn’t respond properly
A very nice Pixel-Art
Garlic’s art and graphic design are pretty cool. It has a very simple pixel-art section but it is more than compliant. The protagonist and the enemies are very well designed and the settings, although quite simple, are very beautiful.
The soundtrack of the title conforms to it without further ado, they are quite enjoyable melodies and they go well with the different levels of the adventure, but if a level suffocates us, which is quite possible, it is possible that the melody becomes heavy for us. The other sound effects are pretty normal, being the section that shines the least in the whole game.
Conclusions of garlic
Garlic surprised me. It’s a platform game reminiscent of Celeste and very fun and challenging. A game that, despite having died thousands of times, does not generate feelings of frustration and that will keep you glued to the screen for the 12 hours that it lasts. Its beautiful graphic and artistic section, its low price, its mini-games, its difficulty… There are a lot of points in favor of Garlic and very few against him.. It’s true that more than one person can dismiss its pixel-art section, but if you like this type of game, you’re going to enjoy Garlic as much as I do.
