According to a new GDC survey, almost 50 percent of developers use generative AI tools in the workplace.
A new GDC State of the Games Industry survey asked more than 3,000 participants from indie and AAA studios about the use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, GitHub Co-Pilot or Adobe Generative Fill in the workplace.
31 percent of those surveyed said they personally used the tools in question; another 18 percent said they did not use the tools themselves, but their colleagues did.
15 percent of those who do not use generative AI tools said they were interested in trying it out. 23 percent denied any interest in using it at work.
With a share of 37 percent of those surveyed, the technologies are used significantly more often in indie studios than in AAA or AA studios (21 percent).
51 percent said that their workplace has guidelines for the use of AI tools, 30 percent say the tools are optional, and 12 percent are not allowed at all. 7 percent said that only selected tools are allowed and 2 percent said they are mandatory.
According to the survey, AI is used differently within the development studios in different areas of work, with economics and finance having the largest share at 44 percent of those surveyed.
This is followed by community and PR (41 percent), production and team management (33 percent), programming (25 percent), game design (21 percent), narrative (13 percent), visual art (16 percent), audio (14 percent) and quality assurance (6 percent).
42 percent of participants said they were “very concerned” about the ethical aspects of using generative AI in the gaming industry. Another 42 percent were “somewhat worried.”
While some respondents highlight positive benefits such as optimized processes or workflow support, others have concerns about replacement by AI and the associated loss of true creativity.
